Good morning. So we are here today with Gordana Slepchev. She is the chief operating officer of Lameco Metals. And I love this. She said to make sure and remind you she is also a professional mother, wife, and daughter. And I love that. I'm sure we'll get into that with the questions. But thank you, Gordana, for coming and sharing your story with us.
00:26.31
Gordana Slepcev
You're welcome. I'm very happy to be here today and you know share my experiences as a woman and a leader and hope um get some inspiration or help some other women on their own journey.
00:40.38
loriejones7
I agree. That's always the goal. And I love that we have so many women willing to share their journeys and and help just a little bit to inspire or guide or a mentor those young women just starting in the industry. So the first question I always always ask is, I'm a reader. I love reading. What is your favorite book?
01:02.70
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I have to go and grab the title and the book, ah but it's basically a quick and talks about, you know, your first impressions within first the few minutes about the people, situation, everything else. are the right impressions you know and you know ah talks about our gut feel and sense and unconscious decisions we make based on information we foresee and how actually that's all right you know to trust your gut and everything else and can of I read that probably about 15-20 years ago
01:45.76
Gordana Slepcev
And I had a ha moment when I realized, okay, well, it's fine. And, you know, sometimes we suppress certain things as as a woman where we trust our gut, like saying, oh, I don't feel comfortable with that. It's just, it's okay. It's okay. You know, opened up a new dimension for me. I think it helped me out in professional and personal ah you know life to can overcome some situations and yo feel fine about my decisions.
02:20.81
loriejones7
I think that's interesting because a lot of times, in fact, there's a book that I just read, which is Don't Trust Your Gut. And and I think that's funny. that the it And it was it was all about like how you you know if you have the um if you have the learning behind it, then it makes sense to trust your gut. But I've always kind of felt that way, Gridana. I've always felt like you should trust you know, that but voice inside of you that's telling you to go one way or another.
02:44.96
Gordana Slepcev
Yes.
02:49.16
loriejones7
And that um and that you kind of rely on that sometimes, both professionally and personally.
02:57.74
Gordana Slepcev
I think it makes sense because you know we all accumulate experience is good and bad and then all of us are a little bit different some are more extroverts or more introvert and if your first reflex is not to do something then you shouldn't and then think about it and come back if you have opportunity of course but yeah I think that's okay you know
03:19.47
loriejones7
Yeah. So tell me a little bit about your journey. How did you get where you are today? And and what do you do that sort of thing?
03:30.36
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, so um I'm Serbian and my husband and I immigrated to Canada in 2003 with two kids. So I'm a mining engineer and I'm ah born and raised in the mining town. So I love the mining. That's how I got the into that entire business. I saw the benefits that actually mining can bring to the communities, the regions. and everything else like that comes with it. And of course ah Canada as a mining country, it's a lot of projects, it was really a good place for us to move in and grow and live in. So we lived and moved all across Canada from the east to the west coast, central and then really stationed in the last so few years ah basically in Toronto.
04:23.68
Gordana Slepcev
And our kids are now grown up, so that's that's a bit different. And then, you know, we're always open to kind of new experiences. My husband's also a mining engineer, so we met at the university. So that that's kind of my story. And then growing and working through these different companies and the projects, you know, I have got the opportunity and to have a great mentors and people that actually believed into me. in me and give me these opportunities to actually grow and take on these ah different responsibilities. So I'm really happy and grateful for that. And you know, it's just that the advice really for young ladies is find the mentors and find your really people that will support you and guide you through your career.
05:15.69
loriejones7
Yeah. So you were an engineer, um, uh, coming into the mining industry and do you, do you work in all sorts of, or did you ever work in a mine, like a coal mine or.
05:28.70
Gordana Slepcev
Yes, yes, actually I'm born in the region in Serbia where the coal mining is pediment for power production.
05:28.76
loriejones7
ah
05:37.58
Gordana Slepcev
And then, yes, I've worked in BC in the metallurgical coal mines. I've worked in Newfoundland in Gold, in Northern Ontario in Potash and also you know, had projects in the school share, worked in the projects in Newfoundland, in Labrador, I don't know. So I worked and lived all across the the country. So I have that operational hands-on experience. And I sometimes tell to the junior people, you know, I know how long it takes to do that job because I did it.
06:14.06
loriejones7
That's so interesting. my ah My husband actually worked in a coal mine in um Rock Springs, Wyoming for a year or two um during the recession when you know when we were out of one job and between jobs for a while. and um it was it's really fascinating if you've never seen it.
06:35.09
Gordana Slepcev
Yup,
06:36.12
loriejones7
It's fascinating how they get coal out of the ground.
06:38.72
Gordana Slepcev
the
06:39.14
loriejones7
It's like they have these huge machines and they and they go through and like dig coal and in the they're in tunnels and you go down in elevators to go in tunnels.
06:39.39
Gordana Slepcev
yup, yup.
06:50.38
loriejones7
That is super interesting. And I like that you said that um you know you came up through the ranks, so to speak, so you know what the jobs entail and probably gave you a little bit more understanding or compassion when people were going through those jobs. you know You know how long the job should take, but sometimes the job takes longer than the supervisor thinks it takes.
07:09.22
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, yeah.
07:16.58
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I mean, the the thing is with the younger people is just what people will look into them is that drive and enthusiasm to do the job. Like, you know, people are going to make mistakes. I'm going to make mistakes. I mean, it's normal. And it just ah depends on how how willing people are to to do the job and learn. especially for younger men and women in the industry. It doesn't really matter. I mentored and helped all of them. And you the thing I've learned is you stay true to yourself.
07:53.33
loriejones7
I like that. So, Gridana, what is the best investment you've made in yourself through your journey? Is there something you can look at and say, oh my gosh, I'm so glad I did that because if I didn't, I just wouldn't be where I am today?
08:08.82
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I really like that I finished, it's ah it's a recent accomplishment that certification that as well. candidate for for directorship, so certified board candidate, and gave me a little bit different dimension and different look on the view on running the corporation and everything else, even though I've been in the senior roles in the CSU roles for for a while. So yeah, that's something that I really want to pursue a little bit more actively as I move towards
08:46.35
Gordana Slepcev
you know, my little life in my career because I think I can contribute quite a bit to the mining industry and the sector. So that that's the goal. That's to really once I kind of retire from my full-time job is just ah start helping other companies get where I was or where I am now, just get to the develop their own companies and the properties further. Because I mean, you'll need a lot of minerals and the the thing with the mining, the the humans were mining like
09:16.48
loriejones7
and like that
09:26.13
Gordana Slepcev
since the you know dawn of civilizations because they needed tools and even the flint it's the drug that they made the first tools and then as we get more sophisticated and looking into that bronze and iron age we needed metals to actually do the things and develop where we are now so it's integral part ah of our
09:39.25
loriejones7
I like them.
09:49.90
Gordana Slepcev
human civilization and human development. And it's going to be, like, you know, overlook all these journeys to decarbonize, decrease greenhouse gases and, you know, critical minerals are critical and vital for humans. human society so we need those some other ones maybe less but there are minerals and materials we really need and you know we also shouldn't forget about circularity and recycling and using these minerals in everyday's life.
10:23.34
loriejones7
How did you get from actually working in the minds to this C-suite position that you've been holding? How do you how do you get between that's hard?
10:36.13
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I guess you really need support from the companies you work on and they should be able to recognize the talent. And most of the companies actually grow and recognize as as you move and do the different projects. You know, as I moved through my career was then promoted from the manager to VP and then CEO position as the company grew as well. So
11:05.99
loriejones7
What is the worst advice you've ever been given? And did you did you take the advice or did you not take it? Did you learn from it?
11:15.79
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, so the first advice ah was kind of like, you know, to push certain things you're you're not comfortable with. And they go back to to that first thing, you know, about your gut feeling and everything else. that And, you know, I kind of listened to the advice, made mistake, and really kind of went back to the stuff, knowing, you know, do what you feel is right, you know, and, you know, think that through.
11:44.78
loriejones7
Gordana, I'm so sorry, but we had like a ah buffer. So can you, I'm so sorry, but would you mind starting that again?
11:50.33
Gordana Slepcev
Not today. No problem. So the worst advice was just to push where you don't really feel comfortable. You should push because sometimes things can break. And you know, and my my learning from there and that was kind of like confirmed many times after is just like, go with your gut feel. If you don't feel comfortable making decision today, sleep on it.
12:20.38
loriejones7
So I see.
12:20.86
Gordana Slepcev
Don't push if you're not comfortable with pushing, so yeah.
12:24.25
loriejones7
So they said, they said, you know, just make a decision, just push it through, just move forward.
12:29.83
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah.
12:32.12
loriejones7
And that, and that doesn't, sometimes that doesn't feel right.
12:36.18
Gordana Slepcev
No. And my advice is, you know, sleep on it. If you have some major decisions to make, sleep on it.
12:45.71
loriejones7
See if you still feel the same way in the morning or yeah.
12:47.92
Gordana Slepcev
That's right. That's right. Thanks for having me.
12:50.79
loriejones7
What about regrets? If you look back or you think through your journey, are there things that you're like, oh, if I had known then what I know now, I wouldn't have done that that the same way. and And how would you have changed the situation?
13:08.27
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I really can't say I have many regrets, not in professional way at least. You know, some things, you know, you learn that as a mother, as a wife and as a daughter, there are a few things I would have done differently if I known or assessed the situation differently and maybe would save some sort of time in in getting to certain points so to say that way but in the professional way i'm really happy with what i've done the rules i've taken worked and lived in different parts of canada made a lot of friends and you know had all these different experiences i really love that piece of my professional life and
13:57.13
Gordana Slepcev
Who knows? Maybe we'll ah they'll do some ah different things as this project that we work on. Maybe I'll move to Montreal. Who knows? There are certain things that are good there, and I kind of enjoyed that journey. But ah personally, yeah I wish I've taken a little bit more time with my older son and advised him a little bit different, you know, when you look back and say, well, I don't know. There is really no handbook on parenting.
14:24.88
loriejones7
I wish there was. If they could send you home from the hospital with a big thick book that tells you what to do in every single situation, that would be ideal.
14:26.54
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah.
14:35.16
Gordana Slepcev
yeah Yeah, just um my younger son, he's in the software developer. And now I'm thinking as we're reflecting on it, she should actually create an app for young parents, do's and don'ts.
14:48.30
loriejones7
like god I love it. But the problem is these kids, they come with their own unique challenges. Every single one of them is different. So the the software development would take him a lifetime probably.
15:02.28
Gordana Slepcev
i'm just all but jo
15:06.71
loriejones7
For sure. So what about if you could go back to the beginning of your journey and talk to your younger self? Is there some advice you would have for her? What would you tell her?
15:18.95
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I just, you know, be patient. but That's one thing I'm not really good at. And I'm, of course, a real adult and you reason with yourself that you have to wait on a few things. It's just ah to learn earlier in my career to be more patient with things, people, situations, that kind of stuff. So that's the hard one.
15:42.88
loriejones7
Uh, that's, that's probably, yeah, really good advice. I actually am not very patient. It's probably one of my worst failings. I always want things to happen right now. So how do you, how would you develop that patience or how do you, how would you do that?
15:52.67
Gordana Slepcev
yeah Yeah, me too.
16:00.97
loriejones7
Like, I don't know even know how to do it.
16:04.55
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I think it's kind of reasoning with yourself that if you push it too much, it's not good. You just give it some old time, talk and, you know, wait for it because people ah work at different pace because I might be fast, I'm quick, but not everyone is quick. And to be fair to them, to give them opportunity, just give them more time. Just kind of remind yourself all the time, okay, well, that needs more time, you know.
16:30.88
loriejones7
That's it. Yeah. that
16:37.38
loriejones7
That's really insightful, I think, because, you you know, you do sometimes forget that other people work on different, you know, maybe they don't love finance as much as I do and spend 12 or 15 hours a day doing it.
16:47.61
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah.
16:53.38
loriejones7
So, so you give them a little bit more space and help them
16:58.59
Gordana Slepcev
yeah Yeah, because everybody works differently on the different days, different ways they accomplish the things. But at the end of the day, they do accomplish, they come to the same or similar conclusions, just give them time. And then that would actually work better on relationships and mentoring and everything else. It's just you know supporting people more.
17:27.27
loriejones7
Yeah, I found that sometimes even you giving them time or or having that patience, like some situations that you think are dire or really difficult to navigate through, they kind of work themselves out if you just if you just can watch it happen. it's It's hard to watch it happen.
17:44.38
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah.
17:46.06
loriejones7
It's this it's honestly a same skill you use as a parent sometimes.
17:49.86
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah.
17:50.05
loriejones7
You watch them make the bad decision, you watch them go through the consequences of the bad decision, and it works itself out in the end. you know and and And they learn that that was a bad decision, or conversely, a good one.
17:58.28
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah.
18:01.37
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I agree.
18:04.58
loriejones7
you know and and they And they work themselves through that.
18:11.46
loriejones7
What about, was there anything that scared you the most when you started on your journey? I just can't imagine working down in the mines. Like this is a fascinating thing for me, but is there anything that, that scared you when you started on your your path and does it still scare you or did you learn how to deal with it?
18:21.37
Gordana Slepcev
Bye. Yeah, I think maybe I'm a bit different than other people. I'm not scared about the working in the mine. I really enjoy going down there. I enjoy talking with people, sharing experiences, that kind of stuff. I think that the biggest scare in my life was that I'm going to stay at the same position and not advance my career. That was my biggest scare, to be honest, and not to accomplish all the goals I had. That was my biggest worry.
19:01.98
Gordana Slepcev
and i was yeah
19:02.24
loriejones7
So, so how did you get, um, was there like a tactic you used? You said you kind of worked your way up through the ranks, um, and, and did a good job, but like, there's lots of people that do a good job and they just don't, you know, they don't get seen. So is there a.
19:21.87
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, I think it's important. It's hard perhaps if you work in a very, very small organizations, but As I said, i usually you have your performance reviews, you have your goals and everything else. People said this as they go through career and as you work through your HR, your supervisor. I think it's really important that you point out your goals. I want to be promoted. and then you know these opportunities come along because people get retired or people move on on other roles or other organizations so when the time is right you get promoted and you know if people really see that you're doing a good job that's gonna happen but if you just wish to be there and you don't really vocalize that you may be missed
19:55.75
loriejones7
Hmm.
20:15.66
Gordana Slepcev
And, you know, sometimes it's really hard. Maybe out of 50 people, 20 want to be promoted, the right? And, you know, supervisors can promote only one. So, you know, I'm not advertising changing the companies, but, you know, that sometimes that people do or have to consider if that's really your goal. So, and I think it should be considered because ah after a certain time, and now again, depends on people, right? um doing the same role all over and over and over again becomes a monotone in my mind and anyway but that's why maybe be you know I have changed the rules and sometimes the companies but also in the mining it's really tough
21:03.78
Gordana Slepcev
to stay with one organization for a long time because the mines, they don't last forever. then They have limited mine life and circumstances and sometimes the commodity prices go down so the mines get put on care and maintenance. So certain things, that you know one has to vocalize what they wish to do. you know, and vocalize it to supervisors and, you know, put that in your goals and the plans and talk about it. And, you know, then you have some internal both things apply for it.
21:42.30
loriejones7
Sorry. So I like what you said about vocalizing because I think that that works across the board. I think that there's a study somewhere that says that In general, um, and this is changing, but in general, men will ask for what they want and women don't.
22:00.63
Gordana Slepcev
yeah
22:03.80
loriejones7
And a lot of times that means women don't get what they want or, you know, the supervisor has in mind, Hey, soand so-and-so wants this.
22:07.85
Gordana Slepcev
yeah yeah
22:11.11
loriejones7
So.
22:13.67
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, they will consider it. I mean, at the end of the day, they want what's the best for corporations and the business. And, you know, if you're ready and they find that you are, then you'll get your opportunity for sure. But it's important to say so. You know, vocalize and mention and whatever.
22:34.24
Gordana Slepcev
Be out there.
22:35.96
loriejones7
Sorry, I'm going to take a drink for just a minute.
22:36.86
Gordana Slepcev
That's okay.
22:41.60
loriejones7
My, um, my podcast person can go ahead and edit that out for me, but that I was, I got a tickle in my throat this morning.
22:46.51
Gordana Slepcev
That's okay.
22:48.93
loriejones7
So, Gordana, what, um, did you face any unique, any challenges because you were a woman as you were going through your journey and is there any advice that you would give?
22:50.81
Gordana Slepcev
That's okay.
23:03.82
Gordana Slepcev
yeah i think it's just yeah and this is easy to say but hard to do is just trusting yourself you know and if you feel like you should speak speak you know say what you mean because sometimes it's easy to get pushed away or your advice get pushed away stick to it and be persistent if you believe that that's the right thing to say or to do or suggest and you know support that by the evidence it's just you can't say i want that because i want that no i want that because this is good for this this and this and resolves this this and that right so you have to be yeah having facts behind you
23:52.28
loriejones7
It sounds like you were willing to stand up for yourself, like all throughout your career. That's kind of the, the impression I'm getting is just that you're willing to stand up, speak out, say what you, what you need, what you want, what you mean.
24:07.93
Gordana Slepcev
I think it's ah important how you do it. I found that ah in my career, you know, sometimes we wouldn't get like brushed away because we're found aggressive, so but you know, you don't have to yell to be heard. You know, as long as what you're saying makes sense, people are going to take it. You know, it's just, ah if you may be too aggressive or say it in a, I don't know, confrontational way, people tend to disregard. So if you come and say it in very calm voice and, you know, people gonna listen.
24:46.76
loriejones7
I think that's, I think that's right. You know, that, that it's important to, I've been told a couple of times that I need to find my voice. And for me, that means like, like setting it, saying things, you know, and sometimes I'm, I want to keep the peace or I don't want to rock the boat.
25:00.76
Gordana Slepcev
Mm-hmm.
25:06.52
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's, I guess, internal to to most of the women. We want to keep it, like, you know, nice and, yeah. Sometimes you just have to trust your gut.
25:21.82
loriejones7
ah like that. What about, um, Grodana, what is the thing you are the most proud of?
25:30.25
Gordana Slepcev
Well, I guess the most thing that I'm most proud of professionally and, you know, personally is really having time to enjoy and watch my my kids grow and slowly become professional people. And also, um'm I'm really proud that I really had that opportunity to live a professional career I had. I mean, I fought for myself and I've got what I wanted at the end of the day. And that's something that I would kind of recommend to to many other women. If you're not getting what you want from the organization you work for, you should consider other options. That's simple as it is. You you know, find your champions. and
26:26.20
Gordana Slepcev
find the people that are going to support you, mentor you, advise you and everything else and you know sometimes it's just you're not ready you think you're ready but you're not ready you know and you know it's good to have somebody else you can talk about and mouse back ideas and everything else because you know at certain points in my career I've wanted certain things but then as the time passed I realized I actually wasn't ready in the time you know yes I wanted it but I wasn't ready but yeah it's just ah as you mentioned find your voice do what you believe it's it's right you know and find that the support that you need to get where you want to get
27:13.93
loriejones7
Yeah. How did you get ready? I guess is that, is that you just found supportive people that helped you or did you go to college or did you like read a book? Like, how did you get ready for those opportunities when you found that you weren't in a place when you where you were ready, but you wanted to be?
27:32.50
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, so you do some trainings. You you read the books. You actually, you know, research what you want to do, how you want to do it. You understand calls and proofs. And I think that that's where it comes like, I'm ah i'm a kind of like, scientific person, the engineer so I do all the research good and bad things ah you know and then see what I want because ah you know something that people don't talk much about is as you go through these senior roles that takes toll on your personal life as well and takes away your your your weekends and you have to be working at the late
28:11.93
Gordana Slepcev
to at the night and early in the morning and all of that so you kind of have to see if that's really what you want at the end and I know some women that actually pulled out from the CEO positions because it was taking too much on them like you know it's just too much requirements on the personal life so you know research and make sure you actually do what you want to do it's right for you and it's fine if it's not you know it's okay to change
28:41.30
loriejones7
Yeah, I think that's a really important point that but sometimes um you look at these things and you're like, oh, I want to do that. But when you start looking beneath the surface, that requires a lot of sacrifice in these areas and you don't want to sacrifice those areas.
28:59.27
Gordana Slepcev
yeah

So you might not really want to do this. You might change your trajectory to do something a little different.
29:06.71
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, yeah, that's the same thing. um As I said, learn to be patient and to wait. It's the hardest thing. And in some cases I waited until the kids were a little bit older to do certain things and be more away from the family. travel more for work so yeah everybody has to assess what actually works for them what they want to do because it's it's okay to spend time with the family and be a mother you know i can i hate that i have to say that now and this time in age but sometimes we women feel pushed that we have to do it all we don't see what works for you
29:26.18
loriejones7
Hmm.
29:49.43
loriejones7
Yeah, that's really, that's really important, I think to understand that if it doesn't work for your lifestyle, that that you can change and make a life that that works for you and that makes you happy. And i'm I'm kind of a engineering mindset.
30:01.95
Gordana Slepcev
Exactly.
30:06.54
loriejones7
I'm very analytical. So I probably would have my list of like pros and cons for absolutely everything.
30:10.93
Gordana Slepcev
Yep, yep, yep, yep.
30:14.55
loriejones7
So any advice, Grodana, for a young woman who's just starting out on this journey that you are so successful at?
30:15.49
Gordana Slepcev
yeah
30:22.10
loriejones7
is there Is there anything you would tell her or any advice that you would give her as she's trying to make her way through this path?
30:29.96
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah, make 10 year plan. What do you want to do? How are you going to do it? And then, you know, find support. It could be family, it could be friends, it could be colleagues, it could be even work supervisors and everything else. And, you know, just talk with people, you know, get their experiences and, you know, if that's really what you want, push for it.
30:57.67
loriejones7
I like that idea. And and I think that it's underrated how important it is to just reach out and say, Hey, tell me about your experience. Give me some insight.
31:08.28
Gordana Slepcev
yeah.
31:10.07
loriejones7
It's the entire reason I do, you know, fearless females is to kind of get that insight from someone who's already been through the journey. So they can say, Ooh, I didn't even know I could work in a mine. I didn't even know.
31:24.86
Gordana Slepcev
yeah.
31:25.74
loriejones7
i could I could work my way up and be in the C-suite in the mining industry. So I think that's important to provide those examples. So if I have a listener that um wants to get in touch and ask more questions or just hear a little bit more about your journey, how do they reach out?
31:43.08
Gordana Slepcev
The best thing is to reach through LinkedIn, to be honest. Yeah.
31:47.84
loriejones7
Okay, perfect. Well, I will put that link up in the show notes and I really appreciate your time today, Gordana.
31:48.86
Gordana Slepcev
Yeah.
31:54.84
loriejones7
It's been just fascinating getting to know your journey. Thank you so much for doing this.
31:59.82
Gordana Slepcev
You are welcome. Glad they could help.
