Lorie Jones
Good morning, Fearless Females. Today we’re here with Terri Karjula. She is a business success therapist, and i am so excited about this. Terri has just got this energy that draws you to her and wants to, yes, and I you just want to hear everything you have to say.
00:15.30
Teri Karjala
absolutely
00:20.33
Lorie Jones
It’s just so exciting, so I can’t wait to get started today. Thank you so much
00:24.08
Teri Karjala
Well, I always tell people that I love collecting humans in a non-Jeffrey Dahmer way. Like, right? like i like So you have been collecting, Laurie, like since we met. So, anyway.
00:35.35
Lorie Jones
I love that because I do the same thing. I i like collect stories. it’s it’s It’s like my thing.
00:41.05
Teri Karjala
I know.
00:41.31
Lorie Jones
I collect their stories.
00:41.87
Teri Karjala
I was like, yeah, in a non-creepy way, right? like right
00:44.33
Lorie Jones
Yeah, in a non-creepy way. Yeah, not a bad way. So my first question goes to always is I’m a reader. I love books. Can you tell me what your favorite book is?
00:56.59
Teri Karjala
Oh, my gosh. I have a hard time with this because I feel like, so for business books, if there was a business Bible book for business, I would say it was it’s ah the E-Myth Revisited.
01:11.29
Lorie Jones
okay
01:11.65
Teri Karjala
by Michael Gerber. It talks about all about systems and why. um Get past the first chapter um because it is kind of doom and gloom because it talks about why small businesses fail. But get past that and it goes into the systems. I love it. So I recommend that one. um Other business books, I love The Magic of Thinking Big.
01:28.46
Teri Karjala
I love um um The Go-Giver by Bob Berg. And right now when I’m digging, because I am going into this huge like spiritual shift in the last six, seven, eight years,
01:41.54
Teri Karjala
So I’m loving anything by Tosha Silver. um Outrageously Openness. um I just, I love all her books. I’m like, and I’m not a reader.
01:51.58
Teri Karjala
Like i I, listen to books on CD or audio because I’m just, but I am like reading real books.
01:54.23
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
01:58.77
Teri Karjala
Like that will just tell you like how much I’m loving it. So anyway, that’s from an energy perspective, spiritual perspective, but i’m I’m just loving all that stuff. And then, yeah, I would say those are my, those are my current reads right now.
02:09.89
Lorie Jones
I love that. i and i I always preface this question where I always say, like I could not tell you what my favorite book is. I could tell you my favorite book of the minute or my favorite book of the week.
02:19.86
Teri Karjala
Yes.
02:20.47
Lorie Jones
So i but it may be my favorite question.
02:21.26
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
02:23.71
Lorie Jones
It’s also the hardest question in my opinion, right?
02:25.43
Teri Karjala
Yeah. I mean, also Be the Magic of You, Tools to Transform Your Life. That’s a pretty good read if you want. Like that’s, AKA my book.
02:35.28
Lorie Jones
you go. There you go, Ashley.
02:36.29
Teri Karjala
And it’s all about all the like tools and energetic tools. So there’s like a lot of um tools in there. Everything’s under two minutes. Most of the tools that we provide in there are under 30 seconds.
02:47.23
Teri Karjala
they can people So people can start to connect energetically with ah creating more of their life. so and i
02:53.27
Lorie Jones
I love that.
02:54.32
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
02:54.58
Lorie Jones
I love that. That’s because that’s like, right that’s what I look for sometimes in a book is I’m like, I want to take just one thing out of reading this that I can implement like today, tomorrow, that I can start doing that would make me better as a person, as a human.
03:04.17
Teri Karjala
yeah Yeah. yeah Yeah. yeah
03:13.02
Lorie Jones
Okay.
03:13.04
Teri Karjala
Good stuff. Good stuff. I love it.
03:15.56
Lorie Jones
So tell me a little bit about your journey, Terry. Tell me how you got started, like ah your winding path, or maybe it was a straight path to where you are right now and kind of what you’re doing.
03:25.89
Teri Karjala
Yeah, so the quick and dirty was um I always wanted to be, when I was in school, I wanted to become either a cosmetologist or an an undercover cop in New York City. Because coming from coming from a small girl living in Kansas, that makes sense, right?
03:41.36
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
03:41.53
Teri Karjala
But in some weird way, if you took those two professions and they had a baby, you’d have a therapist, okay? Hair stylist talks to people. The undercover cop goes and investigates and figures it out. So I became a therapist.
03:55.41
Teri Karjala
and loved it. and And so going onto that path from the therapy world all the way up, built a very successful company, ended up transitioning that company out.
04:05.86
Lorie Jones
Thank you.
04:07.80
Teri Karjala
And then about 17, 18 years ago, my social media person at the time goes, well, what’s your retirement plan? And I word vomit ever on her. And I said, well, I’m going to be traveling the world, speaking, and it’s going to be called talking with Carrie. And she goes, I love it.
04:21.11
Teri Karjala
We should grab the domain. And I was like, And I paused for a moment because I was like, what just came out of my mouth? Okay, let me unpack this. i was When those words came out my mouth, I was mortified ah public speaking, not kidding you.
04:37.74
Teri Karjala
And I hated my name. And so in second grade, I asked Santa Claus for a name change. I wanted to be called Amy McCarter because I got teased because Terry is a ah gender neutral name and I didn’t like it. The boys are like, you have a boy’s name, right?
04:53.01
Teri Karjala
So like, I’m just going to call Amy McCarter, right? And so it’s funny that like talking with Terry and speaking and i’ and then fast forward, caught my speaking bug. I embraced my name and here we are talking with Terry is is here.
05:09.89
Teri Karjala
And i I absolutely love it. I love being able to, now I pray primarily work with women entrepreneurs and business owners that are scaling their business. They want to get themselves out of their own ways.
05:21.61
Teri Karjala
So I’ve taken my counseling practice, my counseling experience, combined it with energy psychology, and then applied the principles of quantum physics, so how energy works. I help entrepreneurs use those, leverage those so that they can grow. And what I love helping people most about is collapsing time.
05:39.79
Teri Karjala
So how do we work smarter, but harder? Smarter, but not, I’m sorry, smarter, not harder. And how do we incorporate these energy principles
05:45.27
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
05:48.71
Teri Karjala
which are there for the taking, as long as that we have awareness of them, we can implement them and we can actually call things to us instead of efforting, hustle, grind, grit, all the things that I know that I was initially taught in the business world.
06:04.00
Lorie Jones
Yeah, yeah, that’s, that is so interesting. So the idea of being a business therapist is so fascinating to me, because have said, like, every time I ask a question, um you know, what, what’s the biggest success you’ve or what’s the thing you’ve invested most in, it’s always comes back to, i have a coach, you know, and I’ve always said, i think a coach is just another word for a business therapist.
06:24.71
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
06:32.02
Teri Karjala
Well, here I am. Here I am in the flesh. Yeah.
06:34.96
Lorie Jones
Yeah. And why doesn’t someone just realize this, that that is what they are being is it’s a therapist for business. It’s like a professional because you need that person to like bounce ideas off of and tell you if you’re on the right track and help you work through those those stumbling blocks in your own life um to kind of get where you want to go.
06:48.69
Teri Karjala
yeah
06:55.05
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
06:57.14
Lorie Jones
um and i I’m intrigued by the idea of like the energy because I’ve been recently like just kind of looking at the idea of like manifesting or, or speaking out into the world, what you want and having that.
07:13.43
Teri Karjala
yeah
07:15.37
Lorie Jones
And I’m not sure I’m not woo woo Terry. I’m not woo woo. I’m so sorry.
07:18.83
Teri Karjala
It’s okay. I wasn’t either. I wasn’t either. And i you know I just got done speaking this big event on Saturday. And I love it because someone came up to me afterwards and she goes, I just love the fact that you can incorporate this and you look very business.
07:33.43
Teri Karjala
ah One of my clients said, she goes, I love this because you’re like three coaches in one. She goes, you are a therapist. um You understand the spiritual piece of it and you also understand the energetics of it. I’m like, yes.
07:44.34
Teri Karjala
But i can I can speak, I can get away with thinking about woo-woo because i turn it I pull it back into science.
07:51.36
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
07:51.61
Teri Karjala
So we were on stage and I was showing, demonstrating right there, energy. People can’t question when I come up and I demonstrate it and they’re like seeing it with their own eyes.
08:02.10
Teri Karjala
Now, these concepts are really big, but when you boil them down and you can get them to where you can demonstrate it, they can’t argue with what they’re experiencing, what they’re seeing and what they’re witnessing. And that’s when it becomes really juicy because i don’t have, you you can either believe it or not believe it, but I guarantee you it’s not going to work because it’s based in quantum physics.
08:20.48
Teri Karjala
And so that’s when it becomes fun. And I love the naysayers. love it. Because I’m like, come up, naysayer. Come up. Let’s practice. And then they’re like, instantaneously, like instantaneously, I can just show them.
08:32.79
Teri Karjala
like and And they’re like, oh, my gosh, you’re like and you’re like magic. And I’m like, I’m not. I just know how to i just know how to tap into it. And every single one of us has this the capacity to tap into it.
08:41.02
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
08:45.29
Lorie Jones
Yeah. yeah And I do like that. I like that. I do feel there like you feel a certain energy around certain businesses. Like, um well, I’ll take mine, like the idea of fearless and being fearless.
08:56.66
Lorie Jones
There is an energy around that idea, you know, and and um and I think that there is ah purpose to saying, hey, I want
08:59.63
Teri Karjala
yeah
09:08.50
Lorie Jones
this like you word vomited i want talking with terry when i that is what i want to do during retirement and i think that’s hilarious terry because that is the furthest thing from retirement ever in the whole world
09:09.79
Teri Karjala
yeah
09:21.52
Teri Karjala
I know, I’m like what? And then like my path has shown me that, which is really pretty wild. And so to unpack this really quickly, though, is oftentimes we think about energy or the psychology is like something grand.
09:34.99
Teri Karjala
And yet I’ll give you an example that we’ve all experienced. Okay, let’s say it’s the night before and I’m like, oh, my gosh, I really need to call Lori. Terry, call Lori in the morning, call Lori in the morning. And then the next day comes and then you call me I go, I was just thinking about you.
09:55.81
Teri Karjala
Okay, and we think that that is like,
10:00.73
Teri Karjala
I encourage people, we can create that every day.
10:03.29
Lorie Jones
Uh-huh.
10:03.56
Teri Karjala
one of the reasons I created daily intent my daily intentions planners was so that we could create that, right? When people think of law of attraction or energy, they think about a vision board that you do once a year, you put it on your wall, and then you set it in here, forget it.
10:17.32
Teri Karjala
And so i’m not a huge fan of that model because it’s an energy. And so the more that we put into it, the more we’re going to receive back out of it, right? And so when we get very intentional, we can create those experiences every single day.
10:35.10
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
10:35.13
Teri Karjala
And it becomes really, really juicy. And I was just giving this example on Saturday, how I was at this event, and I was like, this happened, and then this happened, and I didn’t understand why that happened.
10:46.09
Teri Karjala
But then later, i was like, oh my gosh, there it is, like total VIP service. And was like, yeah, and I’m like, All these things. I like experienced three miracles on Saturday and i that’s how easy it becomes.
10:59.74
Teri Karjala
But there’s ah there’s a part of me that just is open to the curiosity of it and open to the possibility of it.
11:04.71
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
11:06.68
Teri Karjala
And I’m not blocking it anymore. Back in the day, hey i was the best blocker of all of this. I mean, I was like, I was resistant. I was i was the V word, okay?
11:18.21
Teri Karjala
The victim. Okay.
11:19.57
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
11:19.79
Teri Karjala
Everyone was doing it to me. and mean This was happening, you know, me, not for me. and And my viewpoint of the world was very, um
11:32.56
Teri Karjala
I couldn’t see the other side of it. Right.
11:36.99
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
11:37.69
Teri Karjala
And so when I started changing the perception, changing, it started of changing my reality. And it started to, but and then once I was in alignment with, everything started to line up.
11:48.11
Teri Karjala
That doesn’t mean I’m in alignment all the time. I’m majority of the time I’m in alignment, right? and so I love teaching people how to get into alignment because then we can start seeking what we desire and receiving what we desire.
12:00.88
Teri Karjala
You know, there’s a give and receive because oftentimes as entrepreneurs, we’re constantly giving, giving, giving, giving.
12:05.85
Lorie Jones
yeah
12:05.94
Teri Karjala
And we’re the worst, especially women, sorry, women, I’m just all under the bus right now.
12:08.73
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
12:10.91
Teri Karjala
we are the worst receivers. I had a client one time she was Her desire was to to land this big opportunity. She’s a photographer. Only three people in the entire U.S. get this opportunity to photograph of this magazine.
12:23.72
Teri Karjala
She finally gets it. It shows up within three months of us working together. And she literally, we’re on Zoom, and she puts her hands up like this to the screen. And you know what she says? I’m not ready.
12:36.72
Teri Karjala
Right here. Here’s the dealio. if it’s showing up, you are ready just receive it all you do is say these five these seven words thank you i’ll take more of that okay and we’re going to do things scared we heard this conversation has been coming up multiple times even today and people are like well do you ever get scared i’m like i get scared all the time like if we’re not scared we’re not growing we’re not expanding we are here to grow evolve and exp expand and that does not mean staying safe that means expanding that means
13:07.05
Lorie Jones
yeah
13:10.91
Teri Karjala
um allowing ourselves to be super scared. I’ve been speaking for a really long time. On Saturday, I was scared to take the stage. I always give Revy, that’s my anxiety. i She always gets 30 seconds.
13:24.61
Lorie Jones
Mm-mm. Mm-mm.
13:25.58
Teri Karjala
She gives 30 seconds of any talk. and And then um what I do, i strategically allow my introduction to add humor so it disarms the audience.
13:37.85
Teri Karjala
As soon Revy hears that first laugh before I even take the stage, it disarmed her. And then I think the stage, right? And so we’re going to be scared doing things.
13:48.89
Teri Karjala
And it’s okay we understand it. Me and Revy, we have a great relationship now, okay? um And so if anyone is out there struggling with anxiety or fear, give her or him a name and acknowledge it.
14:00.74
Lorie Jones
ah that’s a great idea
14:02.43
Teri Karjala
Acknowledge her or him.
14:02.79
Lorie Jones
and
14:04.00
Teri Karjala
So when she shows up, she says, Our emotions are our internal guidance system. It is designed to keep us safe. If we understand that Revy is not here to be at, for once she is here to help us keep us safe.
14:16.85
Teri Karjala
She is doing a great job. Thank you, Revy. So I’ll acknowledge or I’m like, hey, Revy, I see you. see you. I’m on you.
14:24.43
Lorie Jones
hmm
14:24.58
Teri Karjala
and thank you for showing up. Thank you for keeping me safe. That is so kind. And i got this.
14:33.05
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
14:33.69
Teri Karjala
Move over, right? And in the beginning, she used to run my life. And now she’s like ah like a lazy teenager. She’s like a teenager.
14:40.08
Lorie Jones
yeah
14:41.81
Teri Karjala
She sleeps in. She doesn’t even show up. I’m like, hello. And one day I was like so upset that she wasn’t showing up. i was like, I’m taking this major stage and like no rubbing. I’m like, where are you?
14:53.11
Teri Karjala
was like, all right. I’m going to do the show without you. So I was built about a little disappointed. I was so disappointed that she didn’t show for me that I was like, I kind of miss her.
15:03.32
Lorie Jones
yeah
15:03.68
Teri Karjala
Do you know what I signed up for? signed up stand-up comedy.
15:06.07
Lorie Jones
ah
15:08.66
Lorie Jones
Oh, no.
15:09.29
Teri Karjala
And I missed her. I missed her. And I was like, I’ll activate her again. Watch this, Revy. I’m going to go expand myself out outside my comfort zone so that she could show back up again. So I stood up and did stand-up comedy for the very first time.
15:21.81
Teri Karjala
um And then um it was a couple years after that, I was like missing her again. so I signed up for a speaking competition.
15:29.38
Lorie Jones
Hmm.
15:29.45
Teri Karjala
i I had a learning disability. I was dyslexic. Language is that it’s like the hardest thing for me if I only speak one language, okay? but And I did this speaking competition.
15:40.50
Teri Karjala
It was four minutes, and I had to have every word memorized, but you had to have it still memorized that it didn’t look like memorizing.
15:44.42
Lorie Jones
Oh, wow.
15:46.87
Teri Karjala
It was memorized. Holy buckets. Are you kidding me?
15:49.89
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
15:50.36
Teri Karjala
Insane. And so I did it because I needed to stretch myself because I was getting too comfortable doing what I was doing. So I purposely go looking for Revy now because if I don’t know, if I don’t see her, I’m like, I’m getting comfortable.
15:59.58
Lorie Jones
Hmm.
16:07.78
Teri Karjala
I’m getting really comfortable. Right?
16:10.35
Lorie Jones
Yeah. Yeah. That’s a hard thing to do, but it is so, i it’s where the growth happens. It is where the growth happens.
16:17.41
Teri Karjala
Yeah. Yeah.
16:19.41
Lorie Jones
Terry, what as you’ve ah gone along this journey, what is the best investment you’ve made in yourself?
16:27.95
Teri Karjala
and Well, two things. Hands down, any coaches I’ve ever worked with, whether they were good, bad, or indifferent, okay, because i learned lessons from all of them.
16:29.85
Lorie Jones
Okay.
16:37.36
Teri Karjala
But I would say number one investment in myself, hands down, has been like hiring a speaking coach. Gosh, that was like probably 17 years ago.
16:48.46
Lorie Jones
Uh-huh.
16:48.64
Teri Karjala
And the reason for that is I have found myself and growing my impact exponentially, exponentially. um And was having this conversation this past weekend. We were talking about when you’re in alignment, when you’ve embodied your truth and you know what you’re here to do, what you’re here to to share, what is your message, what is your purpose, your passion, your potency.
17:15.63
Teri Karjala
And when you know that and you embody that, that is when the ripple effect happens.
17:21.69
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
17:21.76
Teri Karjala
And you can have this huge ripple effect on people. hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people and it just becomes really easy and nevertheless.
17:31.18
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
17:32.11
Teri Karjala
Because I always tell people there’s two ways to build a business. There’s a marathon, which just takes time. My first company took me 15 years to create an overnight success.
17:36.79
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
17:41.13
Lorie Jones
yeah
17:41.58
Teri Karjala
and And then the sprint, which is through speaking because you have a ripple effect. And that, hands down, I gave my talk on tuesday on Saturday and literally I had Three major players, huge influencers come up to me afterwards and said, let’s do something together.
18:02.15
Lorie Jones
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
18:02.37
Teri Karjala
One of them right there, then in there, did a pitch for me, for my business right there. He’s huge influencer.
18:07.73
Lorie Jones
yeah
18:09.42
Teri Karjala
That’s the power of that, right? Super juicy, super sexy.
18:14.21
Lorie Jones
Yeah, well, and it draws that energy that you’re talking about. It like draws people to you. and And as you we hear like the niche client you know profile or something like that, like you want the people that you’re going to work best with and you resonate best with to be attracted to you.
18:31.87
Lorie Jones
And if if you’re if you’re speaking, yeah, they
18:35.95
Teri Karjala
and it And you and I’ve had this conversation with before. It’s like taking the little sifters that you know kids play with at the beach. And it’s like literally you’re dumping the sand in, you’re sifting, and whatever falls through is not necessarily your ideal person, but what stays on top, and that’s the big nuggets, if you will.
18:53.14
Teri Karjala
Those are the ones, and it just makes it so easy to process through that. And now I’ve activated every everyone in that room. So now either they love me or hate me, right? They’re going to go out and speak about me.
19:04.64
Teri Karjala
There was such a buzz about it. And they were like, oh my gosh, I had so much. I ended up selling products. I ended up having connections, collaborations, like like so much just in that interaction, right? Because people are like, yes, you’re my people.
19:19.23
Teri Karjala
Yeah. Or no. Oh my gosh. She is a little cray cray.
19:21.99
Lorie Jones
yeah And those people hightail it out the back, right?
19:23.12
Teri Karjala
walk away walk away walk away and i’m okay with that because now they i know who i am i know who i want to serve i know exactly who that is and i’m okay if someone’s like you know i do come with my own warning label so um we do say that in the beginning and so i i tell people like we warned you like we warned you
19:25.21
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
19:44.19
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
19:46.65
Lorie Jones
yeah do you Do you publish the warning label? Like I’m curious.
19:49.19
Teri Karjala
yeah Yes, yes, yes, yes, I do. And that’s part of my of my introduction is the very last thing. says as she does She does come with her own warning label. Caution, may contain excessive energy.
20:03.70
Lorie Jones
I love it.
20:05.20
Teri Karjala
It’s not warning label.
20:05.32
Lorie Jones
I love it. Yeah.
20:07.22
Teri Karjala
Yes.
20:07.35
Lorie Jones
ah I’m going to have to think what warning label like fits me. do. That’s so interesting. That’s so funny. So tell me, Terry, have you ever gotten some really bad advice?
20:14.57
Teri Karjala
yes
20:20.01
Lorie Jones
and And what was it? Did you take it? Did you learn from it? Like, talk to me about that.
20:25.05
Teri Karjala
Okay, so I’m going to say it wasn’t necessarily advice, but it was a situation that I’m going to put into this experience. Back when I was in school, and I’m not going to throw anyone on in the bus, but don’t go research this, folks.
20:37.73
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
20:37.91
Teri Karjala
and When I was back in and school, um i wanted to I wasn’t sure what I wanted to become, right? I told you i had to peer i was a peer counselor, and I realized that a very transformative time for me, and I was in charge of the fifth and sixth graders.
20:54.51
Teri Karjala
And I had a fifth grader come to me and tell me when I a peer counselor that her sixth grade friend was going to commit suicide. We got involved.
21:01.69
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
21:02.47
Teri Karjala
And when you’re a sophomore in high school, that moment was like one of those trajectory, like change the direction. And I’m like, I loved it so much. Not that she was suicidal, but but I got to help.
21:13.56
Teri Karjala
And I got, and she survived. and And I just, it tears it chees me up every time I talk about it because it was such one those moments where it was like, just kidding. This is what am I want to do So I ended up going to a trusted advisor at the school and I said, I want to go and we can job shadow at three things, three people.
21:31.17
Teri Karjala
And I told him I wanted to see what a counselor looks like. And he said, they don’t make enough money.
21:35.40
Lorie Jones
Thank you.
21:35.71
Teri Karjala
You need a job shadow, an attorney. At the time I was terrified of speaking. It was awful. I went job shadowed and I just wanted to poke out my own eyes. right Right. I said, that didn’t work.
21:46.55
Teri Karjala
And then he’s like, well, you need to go job shadow and an accountant. Job shadowing and accounting should never be used in the same sentence. Period. In the story. Violation after violation. Okay?
21:58.76
Teri Karjala
So
21:59.24
Lorie Jones
You’re cracking me up because that is my love. i have like, oh my goodness, accounting, yes. You know, in
22:05.71
Teri Karjala
so I walk in and I’m there for like 15 minutes and I’m like, where is the the envelope opener? I’ll do it myself. And so I walked back out. Like I was in there and I was like, this isn’t going to work.
22:19.88
Teri Karjala
anyways and then i was like i really want to see this and he said nope they don’t make enough money they don’t make enough money so we had a traveling therapist and in small schools um in large schools usually you have the same therapist that goes into the same district and sees multiple schools within the district because our school was so small and the district was so small we had a therapist that was she had three districts that she saw schools within those three districts so there was she was in a different district so i one day i stalked her and i’m like in the hallway i was like hey What do you do And she’s like, this what do.
22:52.12
Teri Karjala
Can I come do what you do? And she goes, yeah, let me get approval. So she gets approval. we kind of like override this person. I am so excited and delighted.
23:03.23
Teri Karjala
I go spend the entire day looking at what a school counselor does. i fall deeply, madly in love. And I’m like, yes, this is what I’m going to I’m so excited and delighted. And then I go back That’s Friday, i go back Monday morning and I tell this person, hey, i know what I’m gonna be.
23:22.41
Teri Karjala
I wanna become a therapist, I wanna become a social worker. And he goes, he was so pissed that I went over his head, okay?
23:34.07
Teri Karjala
And he um i became dead in his eyes. He would acknowledge me, he wouldn’t acknowledge me, whatever. He wouldn’t help me in school, he wouldn’t do other things, right? And looking back, we shared the same degree And his experience probably was that he didn’t make a lot of money in that school district because was a school, right?
23:52.23
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
23:53.09
Teri Karjala
And he didn’t know that I was going to move off and go to a bigger city and create a huge counseling practice. And we generated, we took that company to a seven-figure company. Like he just didn’t know.
24:04.27
Teri Karjala
He didn’t know, right?
24:05.85
Lorie Jones
yeah
24:05.91
Teri Karjala
And so, yes, was that maybe bad advice? But one of the, and someone’s like, aren’t you bitter? and I’m like, I’m really not. Because at that time, i had to figure it out.
24:19.93
Teri Karjala
And I was a shy kid and I had a i had to figure it out. And I realized in that it was, you know, I could have gotten scholarships in college and I didn’t. It cost me probably, you know, $30,000.
24:32.36
Teri Karjala
That life lesson, number 682, cost me probably $30,000. Because I didn’t get any scholarships.
24:36.33
Lorie Jones
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
24:38.30
Teri Karjala
I didn’t get any things because I didn’t know. I was first, time I was first, first, first year college grad. And yet that was probably one of my best, when I look back in life, that was probably one of the greatest gifts he could have given me is the gift to figuring it out.
24:55.44
Teri Karjala
If someone one says no, go to the next. If someone says no, go to the next. So I have taken so many incredible gifts out of that experience that I will pay $30,000 all day long for those lessons to be where I’m at today and not let somebody else’s naysaying, dream-stealing mentality take away what I know in my heart of hearts.
25:20.43
Teri Karjala
And so you just, you you be the four-year-old. I always joke that I have a four-year-old brain. And that is, what if you watch four-year-olds, and if they get told no, they just go to the next person. And they go to the next person. There’s no shame in it. They’re like, some of them say, unconsciously, like, somebody’s going to say yes.
25:35.02
Teri Karjala
Oh, grandpa, grandma, who here we go.
25:37.44
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
25:38.12
Teri Karjala
And then they get a yes, right? And it’s like, boom, right? And so i’m going to invite all entrepreneurs. there There are going to be doors that close in front of us. That doesn’t mean that’s the end of the world. I’ve had so many opportunities that have come to me because I just chose not to so hear the no. And i was like, well, when I hear the word no, it activates something in me and I go like, hmm, okay, well, that means I just have not been as creative as I should be.
26:04.89
Teri Karjala
I got to go back and get really more creative, right?
26:07.71
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
26:08.40
Teri Karjala
so And there’s a part of this is about timing. So I’m not going to force energy. um But part of this is about timing. had an opportunity one time and someone goes, it’s going to cost you $5,000. I’m like, I’m going to pay $5,000 for that.
26:19.45
Teri Karjala
And then less than six months later, the opportunity came around and I paid zero for it. But it all aligned. And I was on this major platform that was absolutely free to me.
26:30.26
Teri Karjala
And so I just allowed I’m like, yeah, that’s not for me. I’ll find another way. Universe, God, spirit, angels, whatever you believe in. Show me another way, right? And it turned me another way.
26:40.55
Lorie Jones
who I like that. I like the idea that, that the, of channeling your inner four-year-old because I, you know, like no makes me more stubborn. I’m like, you don’t think I can do it. I can so do it.
26:54.08
Lorie Jones
But the idea of like, just not even hearing the no, like going to the next person, going to the next person.
26:59.32
Teri Karjala
Okay, no worries.
27:00.36
Lorie Jones
Okay.
27:01.12
Teri Karjala
I got you.
27:01.30
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
27:02.17
Teri Karjala
I clearly asked the wrong person. No worries.
27:04.10
Lorie Jones
Yeah. Grandma will do it.
27:05.37
Teri Karjala
I’ll ask you again.
27:06.72
Lorie Jones
I just swear to you, grandma would do it.
27:07.61
Teri Karjala
Exactly. Someone will do it somewhere. If it’s meant to be, they’ll find a way, right? Yeah.
27:13.58
Lorie Jones
Yeah, yeah. What about do over? Like, is there a situation where you’re like, oh, my gosh, if I could go back and do that again, i totally would. I know that, you know, a lot of times you don’t like to talk about regrets or things that you regret doing the way you do.
27:29.03
Lorie Jones
But there are tons of times in my life I would love to go back and have a do over.
27:30.83
Teri Karjala
yeah
27:33.13
Lorie Jones
I’m like, I know so much more now. I could do this so much better.
27:36.26
Teri Karjala
Yeah, I think that my first company, um when i never wanted to I never wanted to open a business. I had no desire and then like the path would have it. That’s how. And then I got to a place where I was management.
27:47.21
Teri Karjala
And then you go from a place of not having any business experience, no business classes, nothing. And you’re learning it the hard knocks way. and I always look back and reflect on that as I became a better person. I became a better leader. I became a better all the things.
28:02.47
Teri Karjala
But I think there’s some things along the way that I would have handled differently if I’d known what I know now today. um But you just don’t know. You’re dumping you’re jumping in and you’re growing and you’re expanding and you’re, you know, could I have had some better conversations with staff? Could have had a better conversation with something that was brought to my face and I, you know, responded versus reacted, you 100%, 100%, you know?
28:23.62
Teri Karjala
one hundred one hundred percent you know
28:26.51
Lorie Jones
So how would you have done that? Like, would you have taken classes, gone to school, got your MBA? Would you have, um like, I don’t know, got some sort of credential?
28:34.24
Teri Karjala
No, I’m not, yeah, I’m not really, and that that’s a great question. I don’t really know because I was, I would i have jokes that i I have like, if I put all the time that I’ve spent in education, i have probably have three additional master’s degree easily because, and I’m an implementer, so I go learn and implement, right?
28:48.02
Lorie Jones
Uh-huh.
28:51.37
Teri Karjala
And so I trust that things happen for us, not to us. And that in that moment, um that was what I needed to learn, hear, see, experience.
29:03.62
Teri Karjala
So it’s hard for me to say it’s a regret because I know that that’s part of my expansion process.
29:08.09
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
29:08.23
Teri Karjala
And so I wouldn’t be the person I am today without all the mistakes, without all the, you know, I joke that I have like, you know, life lesson number 642, you know, because like those, and it’s a good positive spin on it, but it’s like, okay, um I trust that that information with um was for me to experience.
29:28.02
Teri Karjala
And I’ll give an example. I always use muscle testing for everything that I do in business so I can scale my business faster, smarter, and and and better. And I got a yes on hiring this one person.
29:39.41
Teri Karjala
So I get a yes, and I’m like, fantastic, which means, and then I go out five years. I say, if I make this choice now, will this be a contribution in five years? And I got another yes. I was like, cool, that’s going to great experience.
29:50.45
Teri Karjala
Within three months, I had to fire her. And I didn’t like firing people. And I’m like, what? Why did I get a yes on this? Hello, hello. What was wrong with this? And instead of looking at what’s wrong with it, I started looking at what’s right about this, right?
30:05.55
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
30:06.23
Teri Karjala
So I had always had had always fired admin people, people in the office area, but I’d never fired an actual therapist who has a caseload.
30:16.76
Teri Karjala
I had no system in process. So that opportunity, she had a small caseload, she had like 16, 17 people on her caseload. So it gave me this like ability to let her go and figure out what I’m going to do with these clients.
30:31.61
Teri Karjala
So I was, it was great. So then I put systems in place and I realized it was a weak link in my business that needed systems. And so after that, it was like, okay. And it gave me like, looked like a peace of mind that if anything ever happened down the road, which it did.
30:45.99
Teri Karjala
and I was, I had the systems in place to be able to say, nope, we’re done. Thank you.
30:50.47
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
30:50.55
Teri Karjala
And then over over time, I realized id hated firing people, so I found energetic ways to do it without me doing it. And so then they’d come in and give notice. They’re like, oh, gosh. And I just act like I was disappointed.
31:01.16
Teri Karjala
I’m like, oh, my gosh. But I was just like, nope we’re we’re done. with We’re done with this person. Okay, come get keb give me notice. Give me a notice.
31:09.66
Lorie Jones
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:11.51
Teri Karjala
Yeah. So, oh, my gosh.
31:12.64
Lorie Jones
A whole class on that would probably be helpful.
31:15.38
Teri Karjala
So much fun. So much fun.
31:17.95
Lorie Jones
So if you could go back and high five yourself for a really great financial decision in the past, what would that be?
31:25.90
Teri Karjala
um My husband and i both attended um this. It was called the Millionaire Mind Intensive by, what is his name? Harv Ecker.
31:39.83
Lorie Jones
Mm
31:42.08
Teri Karjala
T.
31:44.38
Teri Karjala
harbbackcker and um it was such a transformative time. i don’t, they’ve been bought out and he knows longer. It’s still around, but it’s bought out by somebody else. And was just one of those moments where, because it was a three-day intensive, we got to do a of deep work on our mental health. I mean, like our mindset, we got to do how we spend, why we spend, look, we started putting in savings and understanding how to, you know, we do a, we set it and forget it. So we have money moving all the time into our savings spots and
32:17.81
Teri Karjala
We generated more money in that like three months than we did trying to save for like three years. Like not kidding you.
32:24.79
Lorie Jones
Oh, that’s so interesting.
32:25.27
Teri Karjala
Like it was such a game changer. And we realized that we were both spenders and we were like, if he was spending them, I’m like, okay, well, let me justify it. Okay, if you’re getting a new golf club, then can I get a new handbag?
32:36.44
Teri Karjala
like And we like realized how we worked and da, da, And so it just really shifted the way we saw money, how we invested money and all of the things. So that was such game changer for us.
32:46.64
Lorie Jones
I love that idea. And I like the idea of like um finding out what your values are and what your natural tendencies are so that you can work with rather than against and make sure that you’re in alignment.
32:56.58
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
32:57.71
Lorie Jones
I love that.
32:57.84
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
32:58.31
Lorie Jones
I do that with my clients. I love it.
33:00.30
Teri Karjala
Yeah. And one of the things I was like, I would i i would like, do you call it? The retail therapy. And sometimes would just, and so I started like going, i’m like, okay, when I had that desire to go buy something, right, I would go to Dollar Tree and spend $5 and get the same hit.
33:16.61
Teri Karjala
Then, going to the mall and spending 500. Right.
33:19.79
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
33:21.00
Teri Karjala
And then pretty soon I did that for a few times. And then pretty soon that it kind of dissipated. And then I didn’t, and then I started realigning my values.
33:25.65
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
33:29.66
Teri Karjala
I’m like, really, do we need really need none of Like, right. And so it has really shifted the mindset around money and how we spend it how we invest it, how we explore it, how do we manifest it?
33:34.23
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
33:40.85
Teri Karjala
How do we bring it into our lives?
33:42.46
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
33:43.35
Teri Karjala
And I will say, i don’t I do not get a kickback for this, but it’s one of my favorite apps. It is a $5 cost, but it’s called The Secret to Money, it’s by Rhonda Burns who wrote The Secret. the secret
33:55.49
Lorie Jones
Uh-huh.
33:55.61
Teri Karjala
And i love this app so much that what it does is it gives you a ah check from the universe every day, and the check will be, like, it starts off like $50 and $500 and then it goes up. Every time you open it, it gives you more money. So then you get to play with, like, what would you spend this on? And it becomes, like, again, a fancy through world kind of thing.
34:14.07
Teri Karjala
But the two little pieces, i always I never thought that I was a giver, like financial giver. I always thought like, oh, I just give like $1,000 a month or a year. that’s what i That’s literally what I thought I did.
34:26.25
Teri Karjala
But I realized the years, it was like about a year and a half, I ended up giving like $17,000, okay? And I was like, oh my gosh, I give more than I thought, like, right? And then there’s a part in there that’s manifested money.
34:38.51
Teri Karjala
manifested money is like, A couple of days ago, someone treated to me to a really high-end dinner. It was like $150. It would have been $150 if purchased the dinner myself, right?
34:49.72
Teri Karjala
And it was gifted to me, right? so I put down, you know, this dinner, $150. and fifty dollars um i was on the toll road the other day, and it said free tolls, free tolls.
35:02.32
Teri Karjala
I did not get free toes that day. I got free tolled.
35:04.85
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
35:06.45
Teri Karjala
So it says, um you know, $3. And I was like, sweet, $3. So it goes into the $3. My husband, last year, he got gifted. Someone had a jet ski. They were going to charge $5,000 for a jet ski. They couldn’t get to work.
35:21.27
Teri Karjala
He gifted it to him. He bought a $15 spark plug. It worked. It was a $5,000 jet ski. I’m like, sweet. I’ll take that. Thank you. I’ll take more of that, right? And it just starts to show you. So I gave in that same time period, I physically gained $17,000.
35:34.46
Teri Karjala
Do you, do you know how much money I manifested back?
35:38.21
Lorie Jones
Double.
35:39.79
Teri Karjala
$330,000.
35:41.77
Lorie Jones
Oh, wow.
35:43.80
Teri Karjala
But like money comes all the way and we always think it has to come from a paycheck.
35:47.74
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm.
35:47.84
Teri Karjala
And my daughter, we were walking out of this store one day. we were talking about money and dah, dah, dah. And I said, well, when the universe gives you money, just say, thank you. I’ll take more of that. So we walked out and was during the winter time. And there was I thought with a dollar bill stuck inside the snowbank. And she’s like, like this?
36:02.63
Teri Karjala
Like literally 15 seconds later. I’m like, yeah. So she picks up the $20 bill. I go, yeah, just say thank you. I’ll take more of that. She’s like, okay, thank you. I’ll take more of this. We walked the 25 seconds to our car and there was another one behind our car. And she goes, oh, another one.
36:17.36
Teri Karjala
Another $20 bill was behind our car. Within under 30 seconds, this this girl had created $40,000. sorry, $40,000. $40. twenty dollars And I was like, and so, so we you get to play with that and money’s always coming.
36:33.40
Teri Karjala
We just always get trapped in this like limitation if it only comes from paycheck.
36:37.66
Lorie Jones
yeah
36:38.02
Teri Karjala
Money is coming all the time to us if we’re willing to receive it and see it. You know what i’m saying?
36:43.66
Lorie Jones
yeah
36:43.83
Teri Karjala
can give you examples after examples.
36:45.87
Lorie Jones
Yeah. Yeah. I like that. And it does. It’s, ah it’s the difference between a scarcity and abundance mindset.
36:52.15
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
36:52.27
Lorie Jones
You know, the idea there is abundance out there and, and to take that a step further, I can be abundant.
36:52.92
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
36:59.71
Lorie Jones
Like I can share and grow.
37:00.04
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
37:02.30
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
37:02.44
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
37:03.77
Lorie Jones
um What scared you the most when you started down your career journey and does it still scare you or not really?
37:11.17
Teri Karjala
um The very first time I took a big leap of faith in my business, um I was, I was working for a company, all the safety of all the secure, like career, you know, paid time off, vacation, all the fun things.
37:25.61
Teri Karjala
And I was being kind of like energetically forced out of the company. And And I kept telling my husband, I think I’m supposed to go into my own private practice. And I’m like, i’m so scared. I’m so scared. And he says to me the most profound thing that he’s ever said to me.
37:39.81
Teri Karjala
And he goes, Terry, like, why are you scared? He’s like, if you fail, you fall on your face. You just go get another job. And the way he said it was just so profound to me. And i you it completely deflated my entire anxiety bubble that I’ve been living in.
37:55.50
Teri Karjala
and I was like, oh well, you’re right. Hello. And so i went with that attitude of just like, yep. And that was my first leap. And then I’ve taken multiple leaps after that and after that and after that.
38:08.30
Teri Karjala
And here’s what I’ll say, with each leap, I still take leaps. um I just took a leap back in October of this last year. and um I am constantly teaching and preaching to my clients how to take leaps and when to do it. And the more you work that muscle, the better it is, right? I’m an adventurista. I do things scared all the time.
38:28.26
Teri Karjala
Because I’m like, I love the adrenaline hit. And so I will challenge myself. And then what happens with this this these adventures that I go on is that becomes more evident.
38:38.75
Teri Karjala
It’s like, you know what? I just ran a marathon. If I can do that, I can do this. Okay. I just jumped out of a flying perfectly normal, you know, airplane. I’ve done that a couple of times.
38:49.86
Teri Karjala
If I can do that, I was so scared to do that. I can do this. Right. And so I use those opportunities. So Until the day I die, i will start to do things that that scare me.
39:01.14
Lorie Jones
yeah
39:01.31
Teri Karjala
And it’s a muscle that we can work together. And um last year, my daughter, told my daughter, it would be fun for us to sign up for this fun mother-daughter hip-hop class.
39:14.81
Teri Karjala
And but in the 11th hour, she decides, Mom, I’m not interested. I’m not going to go. I’d already signed up. I already paid. I was like, you know what? I’m not and i’m not a quitter. I’m going to go. So I went in and I will tell you it was all teenagers and Terry.
39:30.12
Teri Karjala
I was so flipping uncomfortable.
39:32.84
Lorie Jones
yeah
39:33.08
Teri Karjala
So I stayed and did the entire class with the girls, but I was so uncomfortable. And I was like, this is, this is working a muscle. i am so uncomfortable. Um, and I’m just going to stay. And then, it and then, it and then it was fine. Right? Like it was totally fine, but I like putting myself in those positions because it worked the muscle. And it’s like, if I can do a hip hop class with all teenagers,
39:53.87
Teri Karjala
who by the way had major ageism against me. Cause I might go like, Oh can’t do that i’m like oh girl, watch me, what watch me, watch me.
39:58.85
Lorie Jones
I didn’t think you were neither hip nor hop, right? but
40:03.17
Teri Karjala
You know, it’s so funny. Right. And so one of the, the, the instructor, she was pretty young. She was like 26 and she’s like, everyone has to do this except for Terry. And I’m like, Oh girl. And the girls will look at me and I’m like, Oh girl, I’m going to bring it.
40:16.12
Teri Karjala
Just watch. some But I was like, right. Like, does it, playing with it, but it made me so uncomfortable that I was like, let’s do this, right? So we can get ourselves in those positions that make it uncomfortable, good for you.
40:30.49
Teri Karjala
Make it seen as a, it’s a, it’s a, it’s a rite of passage. And if we can work that muscle, it’s just going to help you in business in so many different ways.
40:41.91
Lorie Jones
Mm hmm. Mm hmm. I wonder if I’ve I’ve wondered, too, because I listening to stories of other women who have overcome, who have tried it, who have been uncomfortable and they succeeded.
40:53.99
Lorie Jones
It does inspire me to say if, the you know, not only like if I can do this, I can do that. But what if they can do this, maybe I could do this, too.
40:59.66
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
41:02.51
Teri Karjala
Yeah. Oh, for sure. Oh, for sure. Yes, absolutely.
41:07.50
Lorie Jones
So what about, Terry, through your journey, any unique challenges because you were a woman?
41:18.11
Teri Karjala
I don’t know that it was about being a woman necessarily, although um it was more about my age. That was the biggest thing for me. When I came off when I came out of master’s, my master’s program and I started working with our biggest referral partners were doctors and pediatricians. And, and it’s funny cause I looked like I was 12 and I was going in, marching in with my little suit. I have the funniest picture of me like in my suit my first day and I’m like, and I looked like I was like 12 and no one would take me seriously.
41:52.02
Teri Karjala
And so, um, but then when they would, Um, then when I start like laying out like what I’ve done and what I’ve accomplished, and then they would start to take me more seriously. And I remember it wasn’t until like probably like 15 years in and I had this doctor go, oh my gosh, like you’re a real deal.
42:07.38
Teri Karjala
Like you’re a real business owner.
42:07.52
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
42:09.50
Teri Karjala
He’s like, wait, you have this whole system. you have this whole business. You have this. And, and it was, it was those moments when it would shift, but I’ll be honest, the doctors would go down a line of questioning to find out how old I was.
42:21.90
Teri Karjala
And as new as soon as I start going down the line of questioning, these were my two responses. okay The first response I would say, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, I know I look super young.
42:32.81
Teri Karjala
I have the best plastic surgeon. He makes you look like a slouch. And it would laugh and then people would be like, okay. And so she’s like, oh, she’s on to me. And it would cut the conversation down. like It would be like, okay.
42:43.83
Teri Karjala
Or I would say, oh my gosh, I know oh my gosh i know I look so young. I have such great genes. But you know what, when I am a 90 in that nursing home looking like I’m 60, I am going to rock that nursing home, right? So they would usually get a little chuckle out of that, but it would diffuse the conversation.
43:02.20
Teri Karjala
And then when I was able to shine, they were like, okay, she’s real. She’s, you know, she’s a real business owner.
43:08.99
Lorie Jones
ah That’s so interesting. But you had to…
43:10.20
Teri Karjala
And then there was a bit of a mad respect for that. There was mad respect for that, but it was, it was, I had to like play the game. So I would say it was more my how looked young was the biggest thing I had to overcome as a female.
43:16.62
Lorie Jones
Uh-huh.
43:24.25
Lorie Jones
Huh. That’s so interesting.
43:25.37
Teri Karjala
so
43:25.83
Lorie Jones
That’s I, cause I do deal with, um, ah you know, young entrepreneurs or young women who sometimes look a little even younger than they are.
43:26.24
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
43:34.46
Lorie Jones
And that, and that’s a really hard thing to overcome.
43:35.10
Teri Karjala
yeah
43:37.74
Lorie Jones
But you, I did see here that you said you had to prove you had the credentials, like you had to prove you could bring it. You couldn’t just be like, no, I’ve got a great plastic surgeon.
43:44.62
Teri Karjala
Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah.
43:48.43
Lorie Jones
Life is good. You had to actually know what you were doing.
43:51.00
Teri Karjala
Yeah. And then, and thankfully it worked on my favor because I, I, because I, my, my undergrad, i mean, because i was a peer counselor in college, I mean, in high school, I can, I mean, I went to Washburn university to get that peer counseling certification.
44:07.35
Teri Karjala
I had that on my resume. So I had so much more experience and knowledge and resources. than the average person stepping out of college. And so my resume, it would disrupt a lot of people because my resume, when they would see my resume, they would think I’m in my mid-20s, late-30s, and then I’m showing up and I’m like 22, right?
44:27.94
Teri Karjala
And so it was very, and people were like, whoa, you’ve accomplished a lot.
44:28.36
Lorie Jones
Oh,
44:32.99
Teri Karjala
And here’s the other thing I might tell you. If people are listening and they have children that are going to college, I always tell people this. One, make sure that your your student always takes electives in business. because you never know.
44:44.42
Lorie Jones
oh yeah
44:44.60
Teri Karjala
and then the second one is to help them understand what they they love and don’t love, have them volunteer. Oh, you want to be volunteer? And then you can real quick, love it, don’t leave it. And then you’re not stuck in a job.
44:58.65
Teri Karjala
You’re not but you know you know blowing out jobs every three months, but you’re doing it volunteer-based. And what happened, which I didn’t realize, but now, bing, such a gold nugget, it builds accidentally your resume.
45:12.77
Lorie Jones
Yeah.
45:12.95
Teri Karjala
And so I was like, I volunteered here. was a, my title, I was a volunteer at this nursing home and I did basically arts and crafts, but I was the director of art therapy.
45:26.24
Teri Karjala
That was my title. And I’m like, ah should we put volunteer? And I’m no, that’s the title. I’m like, I feel like that’s, nope, that’s the title. And I’m like, okay. I had on my resume director of art therapy.
45:37.37
Teri Karjala
And I’m like, oh but that’s what they told me to put, right? Anyways, I was like, so they were like, oh my gosh. Who is this chick, right? But giving that volunteer experience and allowed me to really fill in my resume. So my resume really looked hearty and rich because I’ve had so many different experiences. I had so many things that I tried and liked and didn’t like. And when I was in college, I had a ah really clear understanding of where I was going.
46:05.34
Lorie Jones
Yeah. Yeah. And because you had tried those different things. Another thing that I encourage my girls, cause I’ve got a couple of girls that age and I’m like, go interview, go talk to people.
46:14.32
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
46:15.65
Lorie Jones
Like, like I do, I talk to people. I find out what you do. I’m like, do you like it? Do you not like it? Like, what would you have done differently? Like that sort of thing. Like do your own interview or listen to some of mine, but, but like that people, other people’s experiences can really help you hone in on where you want to be.
46:27.64
Teri Karjala
right
46:35.39
Lorie Jones
in a really quick way.
46:37.35
Teri Karjala
yeah
46:39.14
Lorie Jones
What, Terry, what are you most proud of?
46:43.12
Teri Karjala
um I would say I’m most proud of being a mom who I hope that when my daughter looks back in life, she’ll say, you know what? My mom lived life.
46:55.94
Teri Karjala
She did the things that she was scared of. She gave permission to to not have it all figured out. Just to truly stand in that place and be like, you can be a hot mess and you can still succeed, right?
47:11.19
Teri Karjala
You can still do the things that you, being courageous and taking the leaps of faith. I hope she looks back and says, you know what? My mom did it scared and it all worked out, right?
47:23.69
Lorie Jones
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
47:25.39
Teri Karjala
Because I feel like so many times we don’t do things because it’s scary. As entrepreneurs, there was research that was done in Harvard and they said that the two, and they interviewed all these 80 year olds and they said that the two biggest regrets in life or they didn’t spend enough time with friends or family and they didn’t take enough risks we can control both of those we can absolutely control both of those uh we are born with only two fears everything else is learned and so if we understand that then we can say you know what was this a born fear no go go but is it born here no we’re only born the two more fears that we we’re born with the since the the fear of loud noises and the cessation of falling everything else is a learned fear period
47:57.41
Lorie Jones
you
48:09.67
Teri Karjala
No excuses. No
48:12.30
Lorie Jones
Well, Terry, you are absolutely absolutely speaking my language there with the idea of being fearless. You know, you can be in that uncomfortable spot. You can have a little bit of fear, but try it.
48:24.23
Lorie Jones
Try it anyway. You know, what’s the worst that’s going to happen?
48:25.61
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
48:27.73
Lorie Jones
Like you fall flat on your face.
48:27.98
Teri Karjala
Right.
48:29.33
Lorie Jones
I’ve heard women who’ve fallen flat on their face. Pick it up and do it again and do it better.
48:35.36
Teri Karjala
And I have fallen on my face multiple times in my life. So don’t think that I’m like, oh, I’m adverse to it. we I can unpack my dark night of the soul that lasted two years. And that’s a whole, I don’t, you know, as a whole another section.
48:49.50
Teri Karjala
That’s that a whole other interview, right? So don’t get it wrong. i have mistake i have I have failures, tons of failures, right? I just choose, say, you know what? Failure, messed it up. No worries, moving on.
49:01.83
Lorie Jones
yeah learn yeah um any advice for a young lady who’s kind of starting down her journey right now that you’re already so successful at to help her be successful like you
49:03.03
Teri Karjala
Yeah.
49:13.17
Teri Karjala
I would say surround yourself with people walking the walk. Get yourself in the room that you don’t belong in. Even if you have to just show up.
49:24.21
Teri Karjala
One day I wanted to go to this event and I didn’t have any business being there. I just showed up. I said, how do I get a ticket in here? He’s like, oh, we don’t do this thing. And because I showed up, data they felt like I had to do something with me. So they let me in.
49:37.90
Teri Karjala
Okay. So just show up is half the battle. You know, figure it out, right? And I would just say, believe in yourself. we If your are best friend was rooting for you, root for yourself the way your best friend, that you would root for your best friend or your best friend roots for you.
49:57.83
Teri Karjala
And just do it scared. Do it scared.
50:00.75
Lorie Jones
Yeah. Yeah. I love that. I don’t know if you’ve read that book, Do It Scared, but I have. I loved it. I loved theory behind it because I’m so much a fan of the idea of being little bit fearful, but being fearless anyway, right?
50:08.68
Teri Karjala
Yeah, yeah.
50:16.87
Teri Karjala
Yeah. Yeah. I always think about that elev bit over more re Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote, do one thing every day that scares you. And I try to practice that on a regular basis. It’s like, oh my gosh.
50:28.87
Teri Karjala
And I always joke. was like, oh my gosh, it’s going to make me pee my pants. And here’s the thing is everything clenches up. So I don’t think we’ll ever be able to pee our pants when we’re scared. So I think… I’m just saying, and I’ll be the first to do it, like peeing my pants, okay?
50:44.11
Teri Karjala
I mean, that’s the first that could happen, right?
50:44.14
Lorie Jones
yeah
50:45.65
Teri Karjala
it just You just pee yourself, you know?
50:50.35
Lorie Jones
I love it. Yeah. Yeah. All right. um Well, thank you so much, Terry. I really appreciate you going through this and going through your journey and just sharing with us. If I have a young lady who wants to ask you questions or or pick your brain, how does she get in touch with you?
