The Return on Investment of saying NO

How Setting Strong Boundaries Becomes the Secret Line Item in Your Financial Plan

I love reading, anyone who knows me knows this.  I devour books about absolutely everything, but my favorite right now are take charge books that blend my two favorites, empowering women and money.  Rachel Rodgers has a great one “We should all be Millionaires” and there is a chapter in it that really stopped me in my tracks.

Rachel has a whole chapter about setting “Million Dollar Boundaries”  I’m going to let you all in on a little secret, I’m absolutely terrible at setting boundaries.  I say yes, when I mean no.  I show up exhausted because I have this bone deep somewhat pathological need to not disappoint anyone.  These tiny little “leaks” of energy, time and money add up over time in meaningful ways.

I’ve been working on it all year, and while I can’t say I’ve mastered it, I’ve started to really think what my life would look like if I did, if I started honoring my limits, protecting my time, and stopped equating “yes” with being successful.

At Fearless Financial, we have coined a new phrase “Return on Boundaries”

Every time you protect your time, your space, your energy, say no with grace, charge what you are worth, you are making a deposit into your future.  Good boundaries don’t limit you, they fund you. They fund a future that actually fits you.

You don’t have to do it all, be it all, or say yes to everything.  You aren’t being “mean”, you are being strategic.  Every strong boundary you hold creates space for something better to grow, like clarity, opportunity, sanity, and overall well-being.

I recently interviewed Libby Greiwe, founder of the Efficient Advisor, and she didn’t talk about marketing funnels or time hacks leading to success, she talked about boundaries.

Early in her career, Libby said yes to everything, client requests, PTA commitments, speaking gigs, you name it. She thought saying yes was the way to grow, until she realized she was building a business that didn’t fit the life she wanted. Then came her million-dollar mindset shift: every “yes” costs something.

Before agreeing to anything, she started asking herself, “What will I have to say no to in order to say yes to this?”

That one question changed everything. It helped her create a thriving business that worked around her life—not the other way around. It’s a reminder we all need: boundaries aren’t walls, they’re gates. And every time you close one, you’re making space for what truly matters—to your business, your family, and your peace of mind.

Here is a radical concept, your boundaries are actually a part of your financial plan.

They aren’t just protecting your calendar, they are helping to grow your confidence.  It can be difficult to make thoughtful financial decisions if you are running on fumes, and you cannot live the Fearless life if you are constantly overcommitting to everything and everyone.

So this week, try this: say no once, guilt-free. Protect an hour for yourself. Don’t apologize for your priorities. That’s not selfish—it’s smart.

Your energy is your most valuable currency. Spend it wisely, and watch how your balance (and your balance sheet) start to grow.
