Here.

00:01.51
loriejones7
Welcome this morning. We're so glad to have you with us and we are here with Jamie Magdik who is the owner of side-by-side nutrition and. Um, I just had a chance to look through her website and and kind of get to know her a little bit I am super excited for this Thank you so much Jamie for helping us out today.

00:20.61
Jamie
Yeah, thank you so much for having me Laurie I'm very excited to chat and you're doing some very cool things.

00:28.92
loriejones7
Well, we're excited about it. Um, so the first question I always ask is 1 of my favorites I'm a reader and I love reading? Um, and I I can see why some of the the things that you put on there are blogs and stuff like that that you might enjoy that as well. What is your. Favorite book.

00:48.45
Jamie
Okay, I'm so bad at favorites in general like to pick just one. Um and I'm trying to become a more avid reader I have a ton of books just right next next to me about 50 books. Um I've only read about like one tenth of them um so I'm just going to say my most recent books that really. Stuck with me I'm kind of a more of a psychology self-help junkie I would say that's what I read trying to get more into um fiction. But I really like the book the um four thousand weeks it's called four Thousand weeks and it's about how much time you have on this earth to make an impact and what your values are so again, you can kind of see the the theme there with the psychology and the the other book I just read is the mountain is you? It's just like bite size pieces of information that I think are really insightful. Um, and I tend to read in the morning so it starts off my day and you know sets me out off on a good good foot and good head space. And yeah, so so that's what I would say.

01:47.72
loriejones7
I I love that I my eyes don't open that early in the morning and so I do my reading at nighttime but that kind of sends me, you know off to bed in a happy place. But I love that I Love that idea and I do like the.

01:54.44
Jamie
Um, yes, what should do that.

02:03.24
loriejones7
Self-help and the psychology and all the things that you can learn and do so that I'll have to check those out.

02:07.99
Jamie
Yeah, yes, yeah, I'm definitely a learn to or read to learn. Um, but I want to become more of a read to enjoy. But I'm I'm a read to learn right now person. Yeah right right.

02:15.42
loriejones7
I know it's all a process right? You got to work on 1 thing after another so tell me a little bit about your journey. How did you get where you are today where what? what do you do talk to us just a little bit about your your path.

02:32.72
Jamie
Yeah, absolutely it was you know I I explain it as really accidental. Um, following you know my values my dreams but very accidental with where I ended up I went to school to be a teacher.. It's really what I saw what I. Knew you know my mom was a teacher.. It's what I had access to to you know, see if that's something I would enjoy you. You have to pick what you want to do at such a young Age. So I Just kind of followed her footsteps without really thinking about what do I Want you know that's a question I started asking myself in general.

02:57.16
loriejones7
Oh yeah.

03:08.24
Jamie
Um, probably later than I should have um, but so I went to school to be a teacher and I was a teacher for 3 years but immediately when I went back or when I started teaching I was in front of the classroom and I started thinking about um, just kind of creating my own.

03:26.80
Jamie
I wanted to help people and I loved helping children having those relationships with children but it wasn't what I desired to to help people with I wanted to help people in a different way. Um, and specifically I wanted to help them with their health and well-being so I started learning more about how to become a Dietician and.

03:39.49
loriejones7
He.

03:45.35
Jamie
Different avenues you can can go down there. Um and pretty quickly as I started learning about what it is to be a dietician I decided I wanted to be um, a private practice Dietician where I get to decide how I want to help people what that looks like. And that was for a mixture of being able to do what I want and have that autonomy and that creativity and really that there's no ceiling because that was a struggle as a teacher too. Um I just felt there's. I'm here I can always learn do more and grow as a teacher but there's still a ceiling in and in my creativity and in what I can can do and what my day looks like um so when I learned about being able to be a private practice Dietician where you you get to create and do what you want to do that really sparked an interest because not only do I get to speak about and teach and promote. What I think is best for folks with their relationship with food and body in that dietetic space. Um, but also I get to decide how I want to do it what I want to provide. Um, what other resources I want to provide outside of medical nutrition therapy that dietitians you know do is their main main thing. so um so I started dabbling or I started going back to school immediately for that on nights and weekends and yeah, working really hard.

05:09.84
Jamie
Um, and I did that for about 3 years as I was still teaching and went to started my internship as a dietician got into the eating disorder field and that's the 1 thing that I said I didn't want to do I said I will I want to work with many different populations and I'm open to working with many different populations. But I don't want to work with eating disorders I ended up in eating disorders and that's all I want to do I can't see myself doing anything differently. Um, and so I feel like the stars aligned there and then I really would really describe my journey as um, a it was just like the ball kept. It's like a puzzle. It started as a small puzzle and then I figured out I I might want and need this next piece and started building. So after I had my own clientele I decided to hire someone and then from there. Learned. Well I really want to take really good care of this person. So that means continuing to grow. Um, and so it just kept going from there and now I have a group practice or a group practice of dieticians. We have a couple different locations. There's about 12 of us right now. Um. I just promoted a director last year to really take care of a lot of things that I was doing so I can work more on the business to build it and best support our clients and the dietitians and also to branch out and be able to start some other businesses that I'm very excited about as well. Um.

06:40.80
Jamie
So yeah, that's ah, that's a little bit of the long journey. Yeah.

06:42.33
loriejones7
Yeah, a long journey. So so talk to me just a little bit. You said something interesting. You're like I didn't want to go into eating disorders. But that's where I ended up like how did that happen.

06:53.40
Jamie
Yeah, yeah, absolutely So it's funny I Think at that time it felt like something I didn't understand um and maybe like unconsciously I didn't want to look at because for a lot of my my young adult life I was struggling with an eating disorder.

07:09.49
loriejones7
Yes.

07:11.56
Jamie
And so and I never like came face to face with it and so it's so really when I was thinking I don't want to work with eating disorders that was that was it I didn't ask myself? Well why or what's there. It was just that that was it and I didn't look at it and it was very automatic. It's something I felt like I'm. Couldn't control. It was just an automatic okay moving On. Um, so I think at that Time. No, it's it's Similar. It's funny because it's similar to what something I said earlier with wanting to you know, just going to school to be a teacher. Think there was just some things I wasn't looking at unaware of maybe putting a ceiling on myself. Not wanting to maybe explore some things that might be uncomfortable to you know, be that maybe slowed down my journey or made it a little bit cloudier just I guess that's life but um, similar to that I Think. So That's why I didn't look at it. It wasn't intentional. Um it was just ah, it was pretty automatic. But then once I got into school and started really learning more and learning and looking more at my relationship with food and and my relationship with my body.

08:05.10
loriejones7
News.

08:10.39
loriejones7
Ah huh.

08:21.74
Jamie
Then that's how I I came to Wow I Want to help other people see that they can have a wonderful relationship with food and body and help them recover from eating disorders disordered eating and see full recoveries possible. So yeah stars kind of just aligned in that very weird way I guess.

08:37.93
loriejones7
Yeah, it's really weird how you started out like no no way not going to and then you ended up with oh this is this is my passion in life. This is really what I want to do and I think that's.

08:46.39
Jamie
Yes I just.

08:51.44
loriejones7
It's so interesting and you have to kind of keep yourself open to those different possibilities a little bit.

08:56.71
Jamie
Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely I think that describes a lot of just my business journey as well is um, you know some of the uncomfortable things that you avoid are the things that really help you Blossom and see.

09:10.97
Jamie
What really does spark your interest What you can do what you want to do and raises that ceiling for you is just getting uncomfortable. Yeah.

09:18.20
loriejones7
Yeah, yeah, that's interesting. So how is there something you can point to or look at um that an investment that you made in yourself that you're like oh I'm so glad I did that that totally.

09:32.76
loriejones7
Um, landed me where I am today and and helped me be successful.

09:36.96
Jamie
Yeah I would say so just in life or in business or both um I would say a huge thing that has helped me is I guess asking for help looking for mentorship. Um.

09:39.49
loriejones7
Both yeah.

09:53.15
Jamie
Looking to folks who are inspirational who have been there before you know have been in. Are you like leading the journey. Um, just to help you. Not only inspire you when you're stuck or let you you know remind you to keep going but also to just show you some of those building blocks to help you get there faster or more comfortable or in the support of Community. Um, so I would say a big thing would be mentorship. But if speaking to the audience I would say another big thing is um therapy as well and like working on taking care of yourself because I think just a wonderful investment is investing back into taking care of yourself and I think with go-getters with people who you know have big dreams Sometimes they can forget.

10:43.59
Jamie
As all, we all can to just make sure you're investing and taking care of yourself to make sure that the journey feels good and you know when you end up where you want to be that it feels like you can celebrate where you're at rather than onto the next thing. So um, yeah I would say mentorship. And Therapy or the 2 Yeah.

11:04.75
loriejones7
I love that that's a that's a really good point Jamie because as you get to the end of the journey. You don't want to like cross the finish line and like fall down exhausted and completely depleted. Um I feel like there's.

11:14.81
Jamie
Um, right right.

11:19.81
loriejones7
There's a lot of joy to be had in your journey and it's important that you you take that time to invest in yourself I Really like that idea.

11:21.44
Jamie
Um, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely I think it's something so easily forgotten you you do have to feel like you do or at least I do have to remind myself of that every day. Um.

11:36.50
loriejones7
Hi.

11:38.76
Jamie
Because it is ah it is about their journey Once you get there? wonderful. But it's going to be a moment. You know you want to be appreciating and celebrating and enjoying the moments right now and they shape they shape where you're you're going to go or if you're going to burn out along the journey as Well. You you sometimes get faced with. Okay, now you have to look at taking care of yourself because you're at this place of Burnout but be nice to just prevent that and take care of yourself and enjoy as much of it as you can you know.

12:05.17
loriejones7
Yeah, that's really that's a really thoughtful answer. Um, how did you I'm I'm kind of going to go back just a minute because you grew you. You were a teacher and then you started your business and it basically exploded as far as I can tell but you didn't have.

12:16.70
Jamie
With this.

12:24.30
Jamie
Um, yeah, yeah I feel like I was just constantly learning every single day it was and there was a lot of quote unquote like failing um that and that was some of.

12:24.86
loriejones7
Any like business courses or anything like that like how did you find a? how did you learn that sort of thing.

12:41.87
Jamie
Think I had a good attitude about that from the beginning I don't know I'm sure I I heard this from Mentors or other folks just about how when you are going to go off on this journey that um to expect the failures and that as long as you keep getting up. Um, then you can you can do it. So I think I wasn't afraid of failing and I was really up for learning and I think in my best interests like I like the challenge I like learning I like growing it doesn't scare me that there's. Ah Ton I have to learn I Always try to stay like extremely modest um and like open for the Challenge. So I would say to go back to your question because I kind of feel like I got on a tangent I would say that um to support that Journey I used.

13:36.74
Jamie
I Relied on a ton of people I was kind of eating up everything I can could possibly get from from you know, Mentors I that I I paid to do supervision to my mentors who are friends my business colleagues Podcast books um you know and then as soon as I. Hired My first person we worked as a team um together learning and continue to do that as we grew the team. So um, it's hard to say because it was a mixture of ah so many different things and long hours of constant learning for years. Um, really, that was. So much of my life and energy. So That's ah, it's kind of a hard question to answer I don't know if I did it any justice there. But.

14:18.28
loriejones7
Yeah, no, no, no, you did and and I appreciate that and it it does sometimes feel when you're starting a new business like you're drinking from a firehose you know, like just so much coming at you at once and and it it.

14:31.27
Jamie
Um, we hear? Yes, yes.

14:36.33
loriejones7
It. It's probably the time to go back and remember to take care of yourself.

14:38.29
Jamie
Yes, oh yeah, absolutely and that was part of the journey too that is absolutely part of the last five years is figuring out when you are drinking from the fire hose how are you just figuring out what feels good in. Taking care of yourself and taking breaks and how it's sustainable and how to keep it enjoyable and that's definitely part of the many lessons.

15:02.37
loriejones7
Yeah, so did you get really bad advice like did someone give you So what's the worst piece of advice someone ever gave you and would you did you learn something from it. Did you take it.

15:12.90
Jamie
yeah yeah I I think most of the time I heard bad advice like I was pretty determined to just step over that so I probably forgot a lot of bad advice. There's one that did stick with me though and that was when I was graduating. With my dietetics degree. Um I mentioned it to another dietitian who had a lot of experience and I said you know this is what I plan to do I'm going to start right? off the bat with opening up my own private practice. Um, and they said. You know there's no way you can do that you need x amount of experience like you just kind of telling me that's not something that's advisable or something that I can do um and so that that's something that stuck that stuck with me because. It kind of stopped me for a second because that's all I wanted to do I had no I wasn't going to do anything different. It was never in my mind too and that was the first time that someone said something like that that made me pause and think oh well can I can I do this should I do this is you know and then there was like was that responsible. All of those things came that that came up. Um so that was probably the worst piece of advice because then I would have been stalled. It might have not done it at all and went after the dreams that I that I had in the way that I did um it could have definitely impacted the trajectory and and where I ended up.

16:40.87
loriejones7
So how do you decide to ignore the device at the advice you just.

16:47.33
Jamie
I think I was so you know I think the excitement um like if when you're doing something that brings you a lot of that is like your passion and something you so you believe in so much. Think it's easier to deal with challenges like that and deal with challenges that pop up in the business because you are values drivenven and um so I think the excitement for what I knew I wanted to do and how I wanted to impact people and how I wanted to help people allowed me to like. Pretty quickly move past that without much thought. Yeah, yeah, yes.

17:22.27
loriejones7
Yeah, and and continue on your journey. Yeah, that's interesting. Um I spoke with someone just recently who who they were given some bad advice as Well. They they wanted to be a lawyer and they were given advice not to and they and it. She did take the advice and win a different route and she's she said that that's one of her worst Regrets. So I find that yeah I find that I find that really interesting that and how to get past when you you are so young.

17:44.90
Jamie
Oh not all he hath.

17:55.59
loriejones7
And you don't have a lot of experience behind you and you're a little scared Anyway, starting out you know how to keep that passion. Um and and find your own path.

18:04.14
Jamie
Yeah, yeah I think it's It's so important to so like slow down and sit with yourself to be able to be grounded to be able to just let yourself guide you? Um, because then I think we can make pretty.

18:21.67
Jamie
Quick and ungrounded decisions and and I guess there's a lot of regrets in just the last five years of little things I would do differently and in the moments where I was more anxious or more fearful or not taking care of myself. It was much easier to make regretful decisions. Because you don't sit long enough to give yourself the time and space to yeah, be grounded in your decision.

18:45.30
loriejones7
To yeah, that's interesting. So speaking of regrets is there one that you can kind of go back and look at and say maybe not necessarily that you regretted doing it because like you said you always learn something from it. But.

18:50.72
Jamie
With.

18:59.72
Jamie
Yeah, yeah.

19:02.82
loriejones7
Is there one that you would have handled differently and and if you could you know, go back and do it again. You would have done it differently.

19:09.92
Jamie
You know I do truly believe that like all you have to fail you have to fail consistently to learn how you want to do it now and that's like what business owning and like life is but if i. If I would go back and start five years ago and you know be opening the doors to the business again I think I would really take some good advice that I got more seriously and I took I took one of many courses. Um, for. Opening a private practice and 1 of the modules was specifically around self-care now right? when you're starting the business and I would take I always put that on the back burner and I think that's really important to start integrating and I know that's a theme of what I'm just I keep saying. Um, but I think it guides so many things you know you're worth it. But it also guides so much of how you show up in in your business and in your life and so I think I would have taken that more seriously and made an intentional plan and maybe. Maybe even received a little more accountability externally from from someone to consistently take care of that. Um, just so at different moments the journey might have felt a little bit better. Um, for me.

20:29.12
loriejones7
So do you make it a priority now have you gotten to where you make it a priority.

20:35.85
Jamie
Yes I do but I think I Struggle I I chat with business owners all the time about this.. There's this feeling in business that um, you know when there is so much you want to do if you take X amount of time for yourself. It will. You know what? you love your baby will come like crumbling down and so there is this or you won't get to the places you want to go. So I think that is a journey I'm on and I have gotten so much better at it and I can truly take time off and I can truly take care of myself and I do that daily. Um, but even mentally it's something to take care of to be able to separate and when you're there taking care of yourself to be able to be there taking care of yourself rather than thinking about the business or what you want to be doing right? Exactly. So I think I've come a long way and I think I'm on the path.

21:17.71
loriejones7
About which yeah what you're not getting done.

21:27.58
Jamie
But I think it's going to take me. It will probably always be a journey but I think I'll be in a in a good place with it where I'm in in this year that's a big goal for this year so I'm I'm excited and I'm on the path but it's a struggle. Yes, like.

21:38.80
loriejones7
Well, you have to tell me but well I'm I'm not great at it either. So you'll have to tell me how you do and give me some pointers. So if you could go back and talk to yourself at the beginning of your journey say talk to your 20 year old self or.

21:46.54
Jamie
Yeah, yeah, for sure I will.

21:55.23
Jamie
Be.

21:57.76
loriejones7
Um, what would you? What would you say? what would you tell her.

22:03.58
Jamie
That's a hard one. Um and you know something I never thought about let's see um I would say to try and slow down and trust yourself and that you don't have to do it all. You don't have to be perfect. It's okay to fail. Um, yeah, there's so much. There's so much I would say but I feel like I would be telling my 20 year old self and my thirty year old self and my 35 year old self be saying you know the same thing feel like I'm working on those. Same very things all the time.

22:43.52
loriejones7
That's that's a good point. Yeah, we we do evolve and we learn a little bit more each time but it feels like we have to keep repeating those lessons huh.

22:49.85
Jamie
Yeah, yeah, I would probably just say though too when I'm thinking of how that 20 year old might have thought I would have probably said hey like the world is your like you have a lot of Opportunity. You're going to be your own Ceiling. You're going to be. You know. The way you are showing up and believing in yourself is is going to either propel you forward or hinder you. So um, you know to trust in yourself and that yeah there's a lot lot. You can do yeah.

23:23.92
loriejones7
Yeah, yeah, I like the idea of of trust yourself sometimes we we get a little scared and we start second-guessing and I think it's important to keep that vision or passion in mind and and work towards it.

23:31.47
Jamie
Is.

23:39.36
Jamie
Um, yeah, yeah, absolutely to have that conversation I agree.

23:43.20
loriejones7
So what scared you the most when you started out and does it still scare you.

23:52.13
Jamie
Yes I think really what scares me the most is um I I do have so much I Want to do. There's so much that I I do have really big goals and I'm not afraid of. Little failures I think I'm afraid of not getting there and experiencing that and um, yeah I would I would say my biggest fear is.

24:21.94
Jamie
Either not getting there and I guess that would be the the big failure um or getting there in a way that doesn't feel good as I mentioned earlier where um, you know I get there and. Was so focused on getting there that I maybe neglected other areas of life that I'm also very excited about. So yeah.

24:49.24
loriejones7
Um, so does that still scare you then.

24:56.63
Jamie
Yeah I think I get less and less afraid because I'm learning about that journey. Um and incorporating new things learning more about myself learning more about how yeah putting those pieces to go together of um. Understanding what does feel good. What do I want it to feel like on the journey. Um, why are these goals important to me. Um, and so I think the more I learn about myself and take time to do that and I'm doing that you know every year um I get less and less afraid. Um, but. I do think it's going to be continue to be a journey as well.

25:36.79
loriejones7
I think I Yeah I agree and I think we're kind of all on that journey. We as we learn and get a little bit better at it and being more present in the moment. Um.

25:38.84
Jamie
Yeah, yeah.

25:47.67
loriejones7
You're the things you're saying are inspiring me to try harder this year to be a little bit kinder to myself.

25:52.17
Jamie
Yeah, right right? You can really tell where I'm at in my business right now is it's really focused around that I would also say something that scares me to um that I sit with kind of daily that I think is important is um, just how I impact others.

25:57.20
loriejones7
Fuck. No.

26:08.52
Jamie
Um, in with the business in my business. Um, it's something I really don't want to let anyone down I really want to make sure I'm extremely mindful of taking the best care of my team and of our clients and impacting the world in ah in in the best way. Um, so I think it scares me. To potentially negatively impact someone? Um, so that's something I carry with I carry with myself. Um, just like you know the other fear those 2 things probably are pretty equivalent in what fears come up or anxieties come up on the daily for me in business.

26:44.60
loriejones7
Yeah, that's it's It's a good thought I mean as as a financial advisor. We've got a lot of um impact on people's a big portion of people's lives and that's that's huge. It's huge to think of that responsibility is there a way that you kind of.

26:54.36
Jamie
Um, and her.

27:00.43
loriejones7
Come to to deal with that.

27:03.86
Jamie
Yeah I think that's been such a journey as a leader and um that that has been such a journey I I don't want that fear to go away necessarily because I want it to always be something. It's I Want to. It to be shaped in in more helpful ways where I'm not. You know, paralyzed by fear which I don't feel like that. Um, but where you know I could I I Want to always have awareness and always be putting thought into every action I'm taking um and.

27:35.51
Jamie
In order to make sure I'm taking care of everyone in the way that feels values aligned in the way that feels values align values aligned for them as well. But I think that one way that when that in one way that that was shaped was. When I'm thinking that is different from making sure everyone's happy taking care of people are it's a lot different than making sure everyone is happy because the and the actions are going to be different for each of those as well and I think that was something that I learned over the last couple years as a leader as my.

27:53.49
loriejones7
Me.

28:07.32
Jamie
Practice was building is that if I'm trying to make everyone happy. That's going to negative negatively impact other people. Um, so it's it's not people pleasing. it's not um it's it's not trying to control something. You can't control with their happiness. It's it's showing up in your values listening. And constantly thinking about how um to show up as the best support as the best leader doing the best you can do for them and those 2 things are 2 different things and you're going you are going to impact people and people are not always going to be happy and people are not always going to agree but that is that's okay as well.

28:43.31
loriejones7
How I like that I like that distinction you made between trying to make everybody happy and and showing up at it at 10 and giving your best effort and and seeing that there is a difference between those 2

28:46.59
Jamie
Yeah.

28:55.53
Jamie
Um, right? right? I think trying to make everyone's happy happy I think it does hurt. It can't hurt other people. You know if you're thinking of the company and everyone in the company if you're trying to really mold to make sure. You're taking care of 1 person. You might mean be neglecting others and um, yeah, that was just that's been a probably the hardest lesson honestly I've learned and in business is leadership is huge. Yeah.

29:23.82
loriejones7
Yeah, yeah, so did you face any unique challenges because you were a woman along your journey to do right into any robots or things that you hadn't quite anticipated.

29:38.44
Jamie
You know what? I I chat with my sister who is in Tech who runs into problems daily. Um, and I think that is what's I could say no I I. Didn't run into much. Um I have a supportive husband who supported me along in this journey and um, who equally you know takes care of our our daughter and um around the house and so I feel like I have been supported in the households and for me. I am in a female-dominated industry and so I think there are you know much less barriers if you know very very like uncomparable um to you know what? you may face and what my sister in tech Faces. So I can't really say I I have um I think in the ways that that did has shown up is um, you know, maybe people looking at me strangely like men maybe looking at me strangely for having a business or having success and and ah just kind of like.

30:29.80
loriejones7
Yeah.

30:47.22
Jamie
Maybe surprised in that way. Um as opposed to how they might react for you know, um a man. Um, but I don't think I really experience a lot of challenges in that regards in regards to um, being female in this industry. Oh.

31:01.70
loriejones7
Yeah, it's and it is changing too I mean the the answers I would have gotten probably asking that question twenty thirty years ago are much different than the answers I'm getting today because because the environment is changing to be more aware.

31:05.79
Jamie
Luckily.

31:12.56
Jamie
Oh yeah, right right.

31:21.20
Jamie
Um, yeah, yeah, oh yeah, yeah, absolutely yeah and I think it depends on for sure your field. But um, yeah, not for me in this one.

31:21.90
loriejones7
That different diversity no matter what it is but but I'm always interested in the answer to the question.

31:32.93
loriejones7
So what is the thing Jamie that you are most proud of.

31:40.96
Jamie
You know before we started chatting you were you were talking about how a lot of people. Um, it's hard for them to say like oh I'm proud of this This is interesting. This is something you know so I do it's hard I had to really think about this question. Um I think I'm very. Crowd of establishing a safe so environment in a safe space and a values aligned space where um, my the people in um, at side by Side. And the people who are in participating with me and helping me in these other business ventures that I have um, feel safe and heard and um, connected and that their values Aligned. So I think that I think that takes intentional work. Every day and it takes a lot of emotional labor. It takes a lot of looking deep at yourself. It takes a lot of getting uncomfortable having uncomfortable conversations. Um and making hard decisions. Um, yeah, a lot of mental and emotional labor as as Well. So I. That is something that I'm proud that I didn't shy away from and that I am constantly looking at is creating a safe space being a safe leader um would that would be that would probably be the biggest thing.

33:00.91
loriejones7
Yeah, how did you develop those like that leadership ability because you're right that that actually isn't usually taught anywhere I mean you get like 1 class on it sometimes if you go to school but that kind of nurturing a growing environment. That's.

33:09.82
Jamie
Yeah, right right.

33:20.11
loriejones7
That's not taught how do you learn it.

33:21.48
Jamie
Yeah I mean I think you you constantly need to be making it your responsibility to learn it if you are leading if you are um, hiring if you are impacting others. It probably. You know it came from I'm working with individuals in their recovery. That's how I started I was on in my business and it was just me and I'm working to support folks making sure they have a safe space and it probably came from that it probably came from just you know I was always the like helper of the family I always wanted to make sure everyone's good feel supported. Um, feels safe so probably from growing up to being a teacher to then working with people in their recovery to then like creating this space it it. I Think some of it's natural. But I think Also I do see this as a responsibility an important responsibility that I have with other people's livelihoods in my in my hands or like that I can impact at least um and just know and and like feel and see the importance. Of what I'm doing what the decisions I'm making how I'm growing as a leader as something that I need to be that needs to be constantly on my radar just in order for me to feel values aligned um as well.

34:42.14
loriejones7
Um, is there a book or a television show or a Youtube video that um.

34:48.10
Jamie
I Mean there's um, yeah, there's so there's some leadership podcasts and books that are great. There's ah ah, a book and podcast called radical candor that I like um but also like it's a lot of psychology books that I like ah just about how you know I Love Berne Brown I think.

34:56.89
loriejones7
Me.

35:05.65
Jamie
You know she has a lot of wonderful things to say I try and really um, read a diverse read and listen to diverse um, leaders and with different opinions with different identities. Um, and I would say I learn a lot just. Through my own team I don't really necessarily always go external to a podcast or a book or a mentor It's a lot of okay we are doing this together. What feels important to you to feel safe and supported and led in the way that feels good. Um, and so every new person that comes along teaches me more by listening to what they have to say what feels best for them continuing to have open space like that. You know we have weekly meetings and supervisions and so we're always talking about what's going to make them feel most safe and supported. Um, and then additionally just the experiences I have had of not only leading 1 person but what does it look like leading a group and what's best for a group which means sometimes you know I do have to look within myself and and bring in. Others to help support and take in all that information to make the best decision for a group. So I think through experiences as well in hard experiences. Um within the group I've learned so I I have to say it's from experiences and and team members the most not necessarily. Um.

36:31.21
loriejones7
A coffee book. Yeah I Love though that that one of the things you said was ask like I think that's just not even done often enough. You know if you want to know what they need ask.

36:33.00
Jamie
You know, external resources. Yeah yeah, you're right right? Yeah, yeah, we have a that's a huge thing. We just always want to have an open dialogue where. Everyone can always share their thoughts Opinion. What's going to feel safest and they feel safe doing so um to create that environment and it's a constant.. It's not a one and done. It's it's constant. It's daily. Um, yeah, so move.

37:01.88
loriejones7
Yeah, so Jamie if you look back and you have a a young lady who's just kind of starting down the path. She wants to she wants to own her own business. She wants it to grow. She wants to be a great leader just like you. What? what advice would you give her to be successful like you are.

37:28.35
Jamie
There's a few things I would say I would say and maybe this is what I would tell my 20 year old self too I would I would give um folks the advice of first of all, just start like fear can really stop you from even starting. And you don't have anything you can't go anywhere if you just don't start. You have to start experimenting seeing what it's like and learning so whatever you do just start. Um, that was another piece of advice. Someone gave me they said start blogging just just start doing it and it was. You know you'll look back and you'll be embarrassed with what you start with, but you should because that means that you're you're showing growth. So don't be afraid to be embarrassed. Don't be afraid of doing things wrong. Don't be afraid of failing. Um, and I think that's as well like you're not able to succeed if you don't try and fail. Expect the failure. Um, it will always be part of your journey and it doesn't mean you're failing. It's just the necessary steps to get to where you want to go? Um I would say get start getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. Um, uncomfortable means growth uncomfortable is necessary going after something you love is going to pull so many so much so much out of you. It's going to really make you grow. It's going to make you look at things. It's like a relationship you know it's going to make you look at things you might not want to look at or you might not.

38:49.80
Jamie
Had the opportunity to look at until you start going down that path so just get uncomfortable or get ah get comfortable with being Uncomfortable. Don't be afraid of that. Um, and really follow your passion because this is really really hard. It's very hard to have a business.. It's very hard to. Um, be a business owner and just to go after you know some some dreams. It's Scary. It's Intimidating. It's scary to feel like you might fail at something That's so important to you? So um, if you follow what you're passionate about and your values I think it's much easier to deal with the challenges and deal with the battles and if it's Led. With passion and values right? right? right? right.

39:30.90
loriejones7
